Doesn't anyone know what a yield sign means?
Find answers to your legal question.

Doesn't anyone know what a yield sign means?

If so, please pass on your knowledge to others as a friendly PSA.
BTW-I get so frusterated with people who blatently ignore a yield sign and just do what they want that it makes me wonder if they skipped that page in the driver's ed book.

Are you asking us what a yield sign is? Because it sounds like you already understand. I think you are just taking up our bandwidth to gripe or give us your unsolicited public service announcement.

Yes I know what a yield sign is for.

ISNT IT LIKE A STOP BUT YOU YOU DONT STOP YOU SLOW DOWN

A yield sign means, YOU DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT OF WAY.

To the cop I took my liscense test with, yield stigns were synonomous with stop signs, but that is not true.

alot of people don't read the driver's ed book. but when you see the yield sign, you must yield to oncoming traffic, you just can't cut them off or cut in front of them. when you yield, the other oncoming traffic has the right of way

it means to slow down

it means speed up really fast to get in front of the other car. I thought everyone knew that.

Yield sign means to proceed with caution only if no car is coming. The yield sign means you do not have the right of way but have no reason to stop unless traffic means you can not safely merge. The key being you do not have the right of way.

Bostonian In MO
A yield sign is best defined as an "optional stop sign". You must stop if it is not safe to proceed and must yield the right of way to unrestricted traffic. If there is no interfering traffic, you are free to continue without stopping. If the intersection is obviously clear in all directions, even slowing down is not necessary although it is highly advisable.

I am campaigning to have them changed to "Watcha le" signs in my town since even the cops can't understand "Yield".

Try living in a city that is striving to become round-about-capital of Canada where it's nothing BUT yield signs.

junielu
Just from observing people's response to a yield sign, I would judge that it means: Continue through at current speed; quickly turn head to right and then to the left so you can identify (if you survive) the vehicle that broadsided you at 50 miles per hour, naively assuming that you were planning to at least slow down before entering the intersection.

Indeed. I know what you mean.
If people new what it meant, the roads would be alot safer.
Some people view a yield sign as a yellow light, punch it sign, or donot view it at all.
Maby the loser that you saw ignore the yield will have a reminder of what it does soon.

gohandinhand
lol, I know its not funny but I laughed when I saw your question because I think the same thing. I think people also forgot the part about blinkers.

How can they know what a "yield" sign means when they dont know what a STOP sign mean! I was taught that "STOP" means the complete cessation of motion but I have yet to see anyone besides myself, coming to a COMPLETE stop at one of those "STOP" Sign...

Maybe the problem is that they dont know how to read! Or they dont understand the colours or shapes of the signs...... But then, they shouldnt have been issued their licenses, should they!

Michael Myklin
Yes, thank you. It means I do NOT have the right-of-way and must allow other traffic to proceed first.

But then I passed my driver's exam a couple centuries ago .... I don't think it's taught like that any more.

slow down and look left right left

means to COMPLETLY stop

momofboys
The people that don't know about yield also don't know about alternate merging, passing on the right, and using turnsignals....for starters. Oh, and don't forget about leaving 3 car lengths between you and the next driver. You can't!! Because the nonyielders think you left that space for them to zigzag through the lanes!!

Some people know what it means. In case they don't:

Yield - (verb) 1. To give over possession of, as in deference or defeat; surrender. 2. To give up (an advantage, for example) to another; concede.

So, when you see a sign telling you to yield, it doesn't mean get out of your car and give it to the next person you see. It means, give up your right of way, because the car speeding at you has it. You can yield your right of way, or your life when the car crashes into you. It seems an easy choice.
