No title or proof of ownership

I have a car. This car was off the road for many years and I was the last regisrerd owner. I lost the title and I dont have any paperwork or anything provimg the car was mine. The dmv says the car was taken out of the system. So they cant do a lost title. What do I need to do in order to get a new one. The car is a 77 mustang and I live in ny
