if they could keep up and think fast then yes b/c sometimes they're great but sometime (like the highway) they go slow like if they were on the street. they should drive to their age

No! Sidewalks are OK, however.

Of course major airlines allow them to fly planes... it's on the ground that's the problem.

Yes I think so but I think there are some older people that shouldnt be on the road as they are too dangerous and cause accidents!! Especially with drivers that have alsheimers

caz b
I don't see why not , if they're not on holiday from an old people's home and don't know right from left or red from green ! I'm 57 and i'm only just learning to drive now. I don't consider myself too old to drive.

Yes if they are in good health

yes, but they should be required to renew their licenses via driving test periodically once they reach 65

Yes but their reactions are much slower

hhbasile
Sure, but they should have regular tests for their eye sight and their rate of response. Licenses should be renewed at intervals. I think that if they are healthy(many of them are in great shape), they should have every right to be on the road. On the other hand, it is very scary to be driving on the road with the older people when they have no idea what they are doing,(the other day, I was behind an older gentleman going 35mph on an interstate and he was on the left lane....would not move at all....) it dangerous for them and all of us!

yeh how else are we meant to get a lift home from the pub at 3 am nanna!...everyone else has to work the next day!~

James B
Yes but should take physical part of test at time of renewal, and I am 52 so it want be long for me but some should not be driving.

Without-style
As many have said, most pensioners that drive have a solid base of thirty/forty years plus experience of driving, therefore will be better drivers than most.

If the over sixties should be taking regular 'special' tests with all that experience, shouldn't people below 60 be equally taking a 'special' test regulary to make up for that lack of experience?

It absolutely amazes me that so many people think that turning 60 is like magically becoming an unproductive part of our societies and cultures. Both of my parents are over 60, safe drivers and are fully functional as members of their respective social and professional communities. Let's not shoot ourselves in the foot by making a bunch of foolish requirements that we wouldn't want to fulfill when we are in our 60's or older.

I will concede that if a person does have a string of negligent accidents, then perhaps on a case by case basis, we could evaluate whether or not that person should be driving, but to make broad and sweeping generalizations of an entire generation is foolish.

PS: I'm 31 and look forward to driving as long as I am mentally and physically capable

stomper
i think they should have to take a re-test and medical

Phoebe
i didint know that was a rule, but yes, i guess with limits, u should have to take a special test

OMG, my dad aint out giving random strangers a lift again is he :O

It isn't the age that should matter it's the common sense, I think any age they should include a common sense test on the drivers test, in addition a hearing test, and a motor skills test. I don't think the hearing challenged should be allowed to drive because you use your ears to drive just as much as your eyes, so in addition to the eye test they need to include a hearing test too.

I got wood
I think all drivers should have a sight , theory & reflex test every 10 years.

Just had a medical which included an eye test and found I was well below the driving standard

I now wear glasses and wonder how I managed to drive before

If you asked my sister that she'd deck you and leave tyre marks across your body as she drove away.

Mick
One day you will be 60 if you are lucky

YES!! BIG HUGE CARS TO RUN BOY RACERS OFF THE ROAD!!!!

blank
YES! My grandpa is the best driver I know... But I think that people should have to take a new driving test every 10 years or so just to make sure that they are still driving safe.

BoyRacer
Yes but i think people should take some kind of safety test every 15 years or so to ensure they are still OK to drive.

WC
If they are physically able, why not?

telboy everton forever
of course they can if there sight is not impaired and they obey the rules of the road my boss is 73 and a very good driver also he still fly's his own plane

Of course they should and as with everyone else their license should be revoked if they are reckless or they are proved incompetent.

Sure, why not? As long as their hearing and sight are still in good working condition.

Have a go at us again its not the over 60's who have to pay exorbitant money for their car insurance is it ?Why assume that we are unable to drive just because of age ?
The worst drivers in britain tend to be young trying to prove that their unmodified Nova or Corsa is the bees knees and that their driving is as good as Mr Scuhmachers.

they are better drivers than young boy racers

the ones who think that people 60 and older should be retested and all that are the ones who fly down the road like they own with no consideration for anyone else. I know plenty of people who are 60 and do fine 60 is not old you bunch whinny little kids.

Just William
I think that once a person is over the age of sixty five they should be retested every three years. However, I also think that drivers under the age of twenty one should be tested evry year for the first three years as they are a bigger danger on the road. If anybody wants proof of this just look at my insurance. I have a Grand Cherokee Jeep and I pay £180.00 a year comprehensive insurance. A seventeen year old would pay over two thousand pounds because they are agreater risk. I am 63 years old.

Clarissa
What an utterly moronic question. Instead of asking idiotic questions why doesn't the OP have a look at the accident figures for different age groups? If they did that, they wouldn't be asking should over 60's be allowed to drive, but should the under 25's be allowed anywhere near a public road? They're the dangerous ones, as accident figures and insurance payments prove. I know many people in their 80s who've driven all their lives and never had an accident. I have no objection to anyone having a medical to prove their fitness to drive, but this should be applied equally to everyone. Another thing - you're unlikely to find an over-60 busy texting or chatting on their mobile while driving, as they've a bit more sense. BTW, no disrespect to young people, and I'm sorry the sensible majority of young people have to pay sky-high insurance premiums, simply because the selfish brain-dead minority haven't the sense they were born with and think cars are for racing along in, ignoring speed limits and cutting up other drivers. I suggest anyone under the age of 25 caught breaking the law in a car have their licence to drive revoked until they're 30 and have learnt some sense. OP, do you agree with me? Keep driving in the hands of those who actually can drive%3Pr
