What's wrong with using a mobile phone while driving?
|
Or do you think there is nothing wrong in using one when driving?

Normally when you are driving, you require a lot of "Bio-RAM" (concetration...excuse my choice of words please) in order to safely use the road. Using a mobile phone also requires a lion's share of that already busy Bio-RAM (allocated to driving safely). If you use your phone while driving, your CPU: Cerebro-Processing-Unit (there I go again...I'm a PC-holic) will divert precious Bio-RAM away from "Operation drive safely" to "Operation phone call". When this happens, it means no one is safely driving the car (full autopilot panels exist only in airplanes and require pre-flight settings/setup).
If no one is safely driving the car, then why shouldn't the car cause an accident? Its supposed to unless some one or something has enough RAM and CPU to keep it going in the right direction at the right speed etc. The safest way to drive and use a mobile phone is to employ any means that won't relocate too much Bio-RAM away from driving: I'm hoping that the use of hands-free phone kits can/do achieve that. Even if they do, I would suggest de-throttling from your current speed, down to a Lower Selectable Groundspeed...if you insist on not stopping completely.
Personnaly, I don't like answering calls while I'm driving because it prevents me from savouring that "driving experience"...where you just can't but relish what the darnned machine is doing for you...getting you along...especially if its a choice car....mmmmm-mmmmm...the symphoy of a 6 or 8-potted Mercedes engine or the baritone of a supercharged BMW "M" version (M3 or M5) or the tenor of a Prosche 911, I guess yuo know what I mean. Theres also the feel of those "legs" (wheels) wearing their choice "shoes" (tires). The story goes on. |

I hope that the answer never depends on what value people place on lives, theirs OR other peoples! Even if you drive using hands free, your full attention is not on the road, even if two hands are on the wheel. |

It is now against the Law - so you get caught, you get find and possibly penalty points?? But don't worry too much because in my experience every third vehicle on the road is driven by someone on the phone, no one around to stop them. Seriously though it can be hazardous to maintaining good driving practises,
you only need to take your mind off the road for a second and you can miss the opportunity to avoid an accident. |

Some people just switch off when on the phone. You can even tell they are on the phone due to their erratic and slow driving |

The cellular phone means a personal call. Unlike a Radio Transceiver,VHF,CB , the conversation is private, so the individuals attention is focused on the conversation rather than the actual events taking place around them. This is a cause of accidents. Accidents kill. |

Anything you do that takes your mind away from the road is dangerous. Most of us take certain risks by even listening to music whilst driving. people fall asleep behind the wheel, people drive when they are intoxicated. In these cases we risk not only our own lives but those of innocent people. Imagine the guilt you would feel if you caused harm to someone else and think of the pain you could cause to your own family if something happened to you. |

They have proven that people talking on the phone while driving, are as bad as drunk drivers, as the distraction is so great, and you only have one hand to drive with.
Thats why |

As a motorcyclist, I treat all drivers as if they are out to kill me. If they have a mobile phone in their hand, it's worse as they aren't paying full attention, nor are they in full control of their vehicle. |

I think its cost me £60 and another 3 points on my licence,(waiting for the fine to drop through the letter box) not for using my mobile, but by being distracted whilst talking on the phone, I didn't see the safety camera (mobile type) I don't answer it now while I'm driving, cant afford any more points !! |

You can't concentrate on the driving it's as simple as that.
I have occasionally been involved in a conversation using hands-free and even then can't recall how I managed to get to where I was during the course of the call.
I dont even bother with hands free now. Just switch it off and if there are calls I'll pick up the messages when I'm ready |

You are 4 times more likely to have an accident using a mobile phone, even when using the hands free kit. If you are holding the mobile phone in your hand you are not in proper control. A lot of people think that if you phone is not against you ear, that is hands free. Think about it it's in your hand!!. Oh yes there will be later this year, financial implications as well as points. Insures tend to load about £25 per point IE, that will cost a fair bit over time. |

It all depends where you are In New Zealand you can use a phone while driving and they all tend to text as well as driving.
But i don't think people should. loads seam to though maybe the new 60 quid fine and 3 points will put off a few. ( but only if they see people getting caught and fined etc.) |

It is incredibly dangerous and takes your attention off the road. You are a danger to other road users and to pedestrians by using the phone.
Hands free set is fine, but using a handset should be seriously penalised (and enforced) to stop people doing this. |

Well driving while using a mobile will distract you. It will affect your driving skills. People will pay attention to the things that they hear than on their driving. |

Using your mobile phone when driving (even with a hands-free car kit) could cause an accident. |

people who really need to use a phone have hands free fitted to the car, no problem, now can the majority of use be honest and admit that 75% of what we use the phone for is absolute garbage.(were are you now then or what are you up to or were are you going tonight), we have turned into a society that is obsessed with the phone and seem unable to make arrangements more than two hours in advance without using the phone. Is it worth risking a fine or an accident for such drivel. The standard of driving on the roads is crap anyway without having a mobile or even a McDonald's stuck in your face. Sorry that my mad rant out of the way for today, i feel much better now |

if you scrolling down the contacts on your phone to find the number your after and your driving a long at say 50 mph ,how many times have you taken your eyes off the road and how long .you could be 2 seconds from crashing into the car in front of you , they may have children on board, they may be stationary
and parked ready to get out of the car
you may be driving a long using your m/phone finding number and you come to a t junction that you have to stop and did not
need i go on.its the time factor???that's why there is hands free
voice recognise to find your numbers |

For one thing you need two hands to drive a car, so holding a mobile phone would make changing gears more difficult and would generally reduce your ability to control your car.
Hands-free mobiles would still take you concentration away from the road meaning you will probably respond slower. |

Pure and simply your mind is not 100% on the task in hand. The only thing worse than talking on your phone while driving is texting. |
|

Cosmic Girl

It distracts you from the task at hand, driving and prevents you from being aware of the traffic conditions and other motorists. |

I was driving on the motorway with my friend recently when someone swerved into our lane as she was on her phone, this caused us to also swerve out of the way to avoid a crash, I then turned to her and did a signal to say ''get off of your phone!'' so she hung up.
After seeing that I will NEVER talk on my mobile while driving. |

Your mind switches off when you're on the phone.
Have you ever been doodling on a pad when you're on the phone - Drawing circles and stuff like that?
Imagine being in that frame of mind at 60 mph |

Cellphones are a distraction from what you should be doing which is driving. I hate it when people call me on mine when I'm driving and don't answer it while I am nor do I make any calls. |

Driving a car is a mechanical process, once mastered, it is second nature, or an habitual process. We therefore 'think' that it is acceptable to carry out other tasks whilst we feel comfortable in this process. Driving a car whilst carrying out other tasks is hazardous, I am sure that all people, when thinking sensibly about it, would agree with this. The problems occur because some people are better at driving than others, it has nothing to do with 'multi-tasking'. When 'poor' drivers attempt to use phones and drive, they cause problems, it has to be said that most of these drivers are either inexperienced or young. They have several distractions to cope with as well as driving...i.e. loud music and possibly friends causing further distraction.
Sadly for most of us we have to pay the price for inexperience and youth.
I recently had a car with SatNav and the first time I used it I felt that I had to concentrate on driving, as this gadget caused me distraction. I realised that even though I was a very experienced driver (And ex-driving instructor), I had to focus on the safety of myself, my passengers and very importantly, other road users and ensure that the journey was completed safely. I was tempted to turn the thing off, but persevered, because I also knew that I would get used to dealing with this machine.
A telephone, is not the same kind of machine! It can cause reactions and heightened emotions and in most cases is not used in conjunction with a 'hands free' system, it is therefore detracting from the mechanics of driving, and should not be done.
The Law, rightly so, offers 'blanket' protection and it cannot allow 'some' to get away with it and not others. |

Using a cell phone distracts the driver from paying attention to their driving. |

The other day, whilst I was waiting to cross a zebra crossing that happens to be placed a short distance away from a mini roundabout, some woman did not see me as she was negotiating the roundabout. I tend not to attempt to cross a zebra crossing until the traffic has stopped, even though, once my foot is on it, I have every right to do so. Had I not been cautious, I would have been run down, for by the time the woman would have seen me, I would have been on her bonnet for two reasons. The first is that she was not concentrating, the second was that she was driving with only one hand operational due to the mobile phone stuck against her ear! |

Of course there is something wrong with it,
It distracts your attention from driving, and will decrease you awareness of your surroundings.
Therefore, it will cause accidents |
