My mother punched me in the stomach today, leaving bruising marks, I'm 16 - is this illegal under UK law?

Additional Details
I spilt a small amount of drink on the carpet, and she saw me cleaning it up and punched me in the stomach accusing me of being lazy - I'm on study leave for my GCSEs and revising most of the day.

Yes, it is illegal. You need to decide what steps to take next, if any, including taking yourself off to a place of safety, if you feel that is necessary.
If you plan to report your mother to the police (Child Protection Unit) or social services, I would do so promptly in order that your bruises will be seen and photographed, as part of the evidence against your mother. You will have to expect to be interviewed, possibly on more than one occasion and perhaps even have to give evidence in court. But REMEMBER that you are the victim here and that you will be treated accordingly by the authorities.

I believe that she has committed an assault.

However, unless there was witnesses, it could be difficult to prove.

Also, some background to this is needed.

Yes my brother -in law

The simple answer is yes it is illegal. You should report her its abuse no matter how old you are. I was hit several times around the face by my mother last year and im 36! i called the police and although there was no marks thankfully unlike yourself they could only go ahead with common assault if she had marked me then she would of been charged with gbh.

how could she punch you in the stomach the stupied woman, i would leave home if you can , have you a relative you could go and stop with, and then i would report her for assault.

Shaz
Its called domestic violence and as far as I know you can press charges did you take photos of the bruising and or saw someone like a doc or the hospital that wrote down all the details cos you may need them too.

That's assault in the USA.

?
It's illegal anywhere! And despite people saying what did you do, nobody regardless of their crime should be punched by a parent. If you don't feel comfortable going to the police is there a teacher at school who you could talk to? You do not have to suffer abuse like that - ever!

Gosh are you okay????? OMG it better NOT be legal in the UK but sorry I don't know. You need to go see someone like a friend, neighbor, or better yet the police or something. Don't keep it a secret... she shouldn't have done that to you. No parent should EVER abuse their child no matter what sick and totally fake reason they have. Best of luck to you. Seriously if I were next to you right now, I'd give you a hug!!!

Susie
i'm not sure if it's illegal but u should definitely let someone know

If it isn't, it should be. Why would she do such a thing? If she has a habit of hurting you, you definitely need to talk to someone about it. Nobody deserves to be hit, much less by their own mother.

My Father hit me once, I was about 15/16 at the time.

I deserved it.

Did you?

The law is there to protect, as are your parents.

It is not there for sulky kids with a grudge to turn on their parents.

However, if you were Innocent of any wrong doing, report them.

Child abuse is a crime.

not so sure about UK law, but I'm pretty sure it's the same as US. if thats the case, then thats child abuse and pretty sure its illegal

and don't listen to all the people who are saying you deserved it. no one deserves to be assaulted

thatdaychild
If it becomes habit, you're feeling threatened in a vicinity where you should feel safe, and you can report that to the police. Do you have another relative in the area you could stay with if it turned to physical abuse?
