Wondering if I can make contact with my biological son

I live in Illinois and he lives in Missouri. I have never seen him, but never forgot him. I found him on fb recently and was wondering if there is any legal percussions for me trying to make contact with him. I cannot be sure if he knows he was adopted or not. He is a minor, 12 years old. I lost my rights by one of those newspaper things that they do. I want him in my life, or at least let him know I never forgot. Any suggestions?
