Born in Cyprus in 1954 to British parents (father was in RAF) and I'm having probelms getting British passport

I applied several years ago for one and basically the brits said I am cypriot and the cypriots say I'm British, in the end I got no where and gave up. I've recently applied again for a British passport and they want all kinds of info which I provided already but now they want the original papers which won't be easy but I can provide I'm just really annoyed I'm having to go through all this when I've been in this country since i was 8 months old and both my parent are British, has anyone else who was born to parents in the services had a similar problem and do you have any advice? Please help!

You look good for your age. Unfortunately for your age it may be that it would be more difficult to get hold of your and your parents' paperwork (proving that dad was in the RAF).

See if you can get a formal letter stating from the British and the Cypriots that you officially hold neither citizenship. Then you'll be stateless and be able to apply for citizenship you prefer to have (might be easier with the British as your parents are British and you were raised there, school records, bank records, proof of residence etc not to mention emotional ties and life in the UK).

Your birth certificate should be proof of your British parentage. If both your parents are British then you are a British citizen regardless of where you were born!

I can only assume that you are having difficulty finding your birth certificate!

?
Thats disgusting... The amount of damn dirty Polish that are being allowed into this country and someone from a loveley country like Cyprus is having problems...

My advice to you as a British citizen would be; next time you are in UK, go to the main passport office in London and bring any helpful paperwork you have.

There are other passport offices that may be closer to where you may be staying...

Best of luck.

Yes Spike Milligan had the same problem and he was born in Ireland while it was British and fought for Britain during WW2. What you have run into is the fact that too many illegal aliens have come here and are demanding entry, so those with the right are held back. Try quoting the speed with which Zola Budd got her British Passport when she was wanted fro the Olympics and she only had a couple of British Grandparents.

If you were born to a serving member of HM Forces, whilst at a posting station abroad then you are british and should have had a British type of Birth Certificate,

If you were born in Cyprus and your father was not stationed there, then you are Cypriot.

Good Luck

Hi were you born in the SBA? I'd suggest you get in touch with RAFA (Royal Air force association) do you have your dad's service number? they may be able to assist you with getting access to all the necessary info. You could also try SSAFA( soldiers, sailors and air force association) they are both interested in ex personnel and family issues. Good luck!

I was born in the Dhekelia SBA in 1959, before independence a year later. My father was in the Army. Both my parents are British. When I put in for my first British passport, I had to send off my birth certificate, my father's birth certificate and my parent's marriage certificate. It's a lot easier now, due to the numbers of children born to service personnel. The birth certificate should do the job.
