every traveller going into another country where ever it is needs a visa it protects you from a lot of untold things that might happen to you in that country usually if you don't have a vise the authorities won't let you in and you have to return to the country you came from or they may have a british consul near that would give you a visa but the safest way is to get one before leaving Englands shores

yeah you will need a visa

Not if you are staying for under 90 days

A visa will be stamped in your passport if they decide to admit you on arrival - you must have a return ticket to leave the US and you must have an address to enter on the immigration card. It might be advisable to have confirmation of a hotel booking or a letter from a friend or relative just to have firm evidence of where and how long you will be staying.

if you are only visiting you will only need a passport

Depends how long you'll be here. If it's just a vacation than you should just need a passport.

no, not for a visit

No, you don't have to apply for a visa prior to your trip if it's only for a visit of up to 3 months. You need a return ticket and a US address (friends or address of hotel). Upon arrival your entry date to the US will be stamped into your passport. This function as your "visa".

Important piece of information nobody has mentioned.

To qualify for the Visa Waiver System, you require a machine-readable passport.

Look on the page which has your photograph. If there is a row of chevrons at the foot of the page, then you are OK.

No, you fill out a temporary visa on the plane (take a pen), and they electronically fingerprint you when you go through customs at the other end...

It's all very exciting!

The only time you need a visa to visit the United States if you are a British citizen is if you are staying more than 90 days, you are going there on business, you have a criminal history, or if you have been denied a visa to the US in the past. As one person stated before, you do need a machine readable passport, so if you haven't updated your passport in the last few years, you'll need to get a new one.

Upon arrival in the US, immigration will stamp your passport with the conditions of your stay (i.e. no longer than 90 days, etc). This is not a visa, as one previous user who answered your question has stated. It just entitles you to a visit up to 90 days in the US. For the time being, most Brits do not need a visa as there is a visa waiver agreement between our two countries, but the US is seeking to have this changed in the future... though this will probably take some time before the laws are changed, so providing you are just a normal Brit with no criminal activity in your past and you're just going there on a short stay, you will be fine with just your passport. Bear in mind though, that if you are staying more than 2 weeks, you will probably be asked to provide evidence of how you are going to fund your stay (i.e. you may have to produce credit cards to show you have access to money). Also, it is now mandatory for you to have the full address of where you will be staying in the US and provide this info BEFORE your flight. Hope this helps!

assuming you are a full British Citizen the you don't need a visa, as others have said there is a visa waiver program.. you just fill out the form on the plane.

however if you are not a full Brisih Citizen (you passport will identify this for you) say you are in the UK on a temporary program, given indefinate leave to saty then you may need a visa.

No. There is a visa waiver programme. You fill the forms out on the plane.

No...Just your passport. You'll be asked to fill in a form on the plane about how long you are intending to stay.. I can't remember how long you are allowed..Think it might be 90days..... But if your intending to stay less than this then no visa required.
