In order to renounce your citizenship you first must be out of the US .
So it is a good idea to have another country of adoption first before taking such drastic measure.
You would have to contact a US consulate in your new country. |

What do you do for what? What would possess anyone to renounce a citizenship without acquiring a new one. Perhaps hoping for a higher IQ in the next incarnation would help.
Of course you might look into the possibility of resuming US citizenship. |

that's why you can't officially renounce your citizenship while in the US, precisely because you no longer belong here but don't belong anywhere else either. If you renounce it overseas at least you're no longer a problem for the US. you become the problem of whatever country you're in. there are plenty of stateless people in the world who would gladly trade places with you now. it's not a pleasant place to be, which is why it's a good idea to have some other citizenship before you renounce your US citizenship. |

It's not impossible to renounce your citizenship. You might want to be certain that this is the right thing for you before you begin.
The more practical aspect is residency- can you continue to live in the USA without citizenship? I believe no one will deport you because you don't have any other country to which you belong, one of the elements of deportation. If you were a danger to the public safety, you could get jailed, but this assumes something we don't yet know.
If you have ties to another country and would like to go there, you can do that without renouncing your US citizenship. Maybe some time in another country will sharpen your perspective on the relative merits of your US citizenship.
