Is it true the US does not support dual citizenship?

I'm eligible to be a canadian citizen, but I don't want to do it if it means I have to denounce my US citizenship. :( Someone just told me that Canadians can get dual citizenship with the USA, but Americans can't get dual citizenship with Canada. Is that true??

Yes, dual-citizenship is only recognized for children and they have to pick one when they turn 18. If you take Canadian citizenship, you will lose US citizenship. |

Actually, I think it is the opposite. The American oath requires you to give up allegiance to foreign princes. Canada and Mexico like dual citizenship.
I am against it myself, but I think your information is inaccurate. |

NOT TRUE
While USA does not officially support dual citizenship, the USA DOES allow it. The only rule they make is that all US citizens must show a US passport to enter USA and to NOT show any other passport.
from link below
U.S. citizen may acquire foreign citizenship by marriage, or a person naturalized as a U.S. citizen may not lose the citizenship of the country of birth.
U.S. law does not mention dual nationality or require a person to choose one citizenship or another. Also, a person who is automatically granted another citizenship does not risk losing U.S. citizenship.
However, a person who acquires a foreign citizenship by applying for it may lose U.S. citizenship. In order to lose U.S. citizenship, the law requires that the person must apply for the foreign citizenship voluntarily, by free choice, and with the intention to give up U.S. citizenship.
And yes BELLE is totally correct in what she says. |

“Dual nationality” means a person is a citizen of two countries at the same time. Each country has its own citizenship laws based on its own policy. For example:
*A child born in a foreign country to U.S. citizen parents may be both a U.S. citizen and a citizen of the country of birth.
*A U.S. citizen may acquire foreign citizenship by marriage.
*A person naturalized as a U.S. citizen may not lose the citizenship of the country of birth.
The U.S. Government recognizes that dual nationality exists but does not encourage it as a matter of policy due to the problems it may cause. Claims of other countries on dual national U.S. citizens may conflict with U.S. law. |

I know multiple people with dual citizenship who have never had any problems. One is a citizen of Spain and the US, another a citizen of Mexico and the US, and another is a citizen of Hong Kong and the US.
Technically, the US could ask you to denounce it. But from what I understand, it's not something ever done. For more info check out this link:

Personally I have been thinking about getting dual citizenship, and would do it I was not so lazy. haha |

First of all Belle is absolutely correct.
Second, while the US citizenship oath technically renounces foreign allegiances, it has no legal effect under US law and most nations would not recognize US law as having any power over someone they consider THEIR citizen. Most nations have a specific process you would have to follow to lose citizenship, though some would in fact automatically strip one of citizenship for being naturalized. Each nation decides its own law.
The US does "recognize" that people have dual or multiple nationalities. However, when you are a US Citizen, the US only expects you to obey US Law. And it doesn't care that you have another citizenship. It will give you no special breaks or status as result, nor any penalties. So in that sense it does not "recognize" multiple citizenship.
When you are in Canada, you will be a Canadian citizen for every legal purpose, and you cannot, for example, ask the US Embassy to intervene if you get in trouble. And likewise, once you enter the US you are a US citizen only and cannot get help from the Canadian embassy. By this I mean, you will be a Canadian citizen as far as Canada is concerned but being in the US the US will deal with you only as a US citizen.
Finally it is almost impossible to lose US citizenship unless you WANT to lose it:

Plenty of people have dual citizenship, just because 'America' doesn't recognize it doesn't mean people don't do it. They just don't hold out two different passports at the one time to the customs officer when leaving or entering the US. |

The US allows, recognizes and accepts dual citizenship. You will not have to give up your US citizenship in order to gain Canadian. Some countries do require you to renounce American citizenship in order to gain theirs, but Canada is not one of them.

EDIT: Some countries that do not allow dual citizenship, yet a child has acquired it, do require the child to choose between them and the other citizenships the child may hold. However the US, Canada and the UK are not one of them. The US does not require you to renounce your US citizenship if you take citizenship of another country. Neither does Canada. It is not just children who have dual citizenship, millions of adults do as well. A child born with dual citizenship does NOT (repeat does NOT) have to choose when they are 18 unless one country requires it (but again the US does not require this).
Some people are so full of sh*t and don't know what they are talking about, yet continue to spread lies. My own son is a dual citizen, UK/USA. The US will not require him to choose at 18 and neither does the UK. He will forever be a dual citizen unless he chooses, on his own, to renounce one of them. |
