MPs expenses - a way forward?

Being that they all only work half the hours a normal man and women work and there wages are about four times more than the average plus most have other highly paid directorships i suggest they pay their own way out of their own wages the same as the rest of us . My employer does not pay me for petrol to go to and from work or pay for my food when i work away or pay my poll tax or rent upkeep , in fact i am expected to pay for all my own expenses so why shouldn't they do the same. As for the person who says they are underpaid if i was getting an average of Â£200 per hour i would think i was in paradise , The average attendance in Parliament for most MPs are 5.5 hours per week , with the majority far less than that.

No, I think a better idea would be that the executives of each party became resposible for the expenses policy of their MPs, how it would be overseen, published etc, then at least the parties would have to compete with each other for votes according to how acceptable their expenses policy was to the electorate, as with other policies.

mp's are paid atleast Â£60k a year for their mp work, why do they need expenses? my family survives on half that.

They are supposed to be in politics as a form of public service ( there is a laugh ) First thing is there are far to many of them 300 working more like 37.5 hours a week could cover what is done now. All this paying back what they've pinched is just to save their a*ses come election time that is all. I would only support an increase in their pay if their number is drastically reduced. After all there are the Scottish and Northern Ireland Parliaments and the Welsh Assembly what are they all doing except duplicating work.

The speaker of the house should be sacked. An independant audit performed on all claims over last 4 years, all dishonest claims to be paid back. Prosecution where taxes have been evaded and those found guilty removed as MPs.

Stumpy - You must be the only person on the planet that thinks MPs are underpaid - most of them have several jobs and directorships and appear less than 5hrs a week. Like the idea about providing accomodation.

They just need to have their expenses CHECKED, and questioned, which obviously has not ben happening! A new set of rules has to be devised of course, but the main thing is to have the claims CHECKED, by someone who is NOT an MP, and any excessive, unusual or fraudulent claims need to be questioned! I just wonder what is happening in the European Parliament. How much money is being misappropriated there?
