Some of the answerers here have presumed that all nationality laws work like the US, but most do not. For example, birth in either Britain or Portugal does not automatically confer citizenship (the way it does in the US). However, for both of those countries, if one parent is a citizen the baby can be a citizen as well. If the baby is born in a third country, though, the parents will have to apply for citizenship for the child.

I have dual nationality but I cannot have two passports.
I have one ID card of one nationality and a passport of the other as my parents are from two different countries
Citizen of the World

Both the Uk and Portugal allow dual citizenship. I'm not sure how it works. But I would suggest that if you live in the UK you contact the portuguese consulate (or vise-versa if you live in portugal) and they'll have some information for you about it.

It should work..in one country he will be an automatic citizen for having been born there..the other will require that you go to the other country's consulate office and register your child for citizenship. My son is Brazilian and American and has a passport for each.

I can only tell you how it works for German/American children. Dual Citizenship, till they are 18. For your nationalities, I would ask the apropriate authorities of your countries.

Your child will have the right to claim both a British and Portuguese passport, thus having dual nationality. Where the child is born determines what country the child is a citizen of. So for example, if the child is born in England they automaticly become a British citizen (with an English parent), but you can apply for a Portuguese passprt for the child and thus become a Portuguese national as the child has a Portuguese parent.

Portugal allows dual citizenship. Hence, Portuguese citizens holding or acquiring a foreign citizenship do not lose Portuguese citizenship. Similarly, those becoming Portuguese citizens do not have to renounce their foreign citizenship.

if the baby is born in england it will be english and the same with portugal but the baby can have either an english or portugese passport an can be both nationalities

If the mother is a British citizen then the child has an automatic right to british citizenship. If the father is a British Citizen but the mother is not then the child only gains citizenship if the parents are married. The country in which the child is born is. Many people state this as a factor but this has not been the case since 1981. irrelevant .The British government has no objection to the holding of dual British/Portuguese nationality.
A child can claim portuguese nationality so long as one of the Parents is Portuguese and was born either in Portugal or Portuguese territory. You will need to register the birth with the Portuguese authorities however.
The Portuguese government also allows Dual nationality.

Further information, if required Can be found at the Immigration and Nationality Directorate or the Portuguese Embassy. at their websites shown below.

Regardless of the childs national staus any Citizren of the European Union is entitled to reside, go to school and work in any part of the EU.

Hope you find this useful.

PS unfortuantely the previous anwerer in incorrect in stating that you and your partner can get dual nationaly in each others countries. This is not the case, However if you aremarried this can be aquired though sometimes this takes years. At least 5 in UK.
