Why can't I have a British Passport?

I live here, I work here, my husband is British, so are my kids. I do not have over a £1000 pounds to do the citizenship but I am a permanent resident. I get flight deals but can't go anywhere without having to apply for visas. I am not illegal, I did the right thing following my family but I am now being punished for this. I do not live off the government or claim from the government but I do pay taxes to them. How can I get a passport so that I can travel with my family.

Because until you become a British Citizen proper - you won't get one.
You say you are not illegal but how would the Passport Office know that - it could be a marriage of convenience as far as they see...
If you think you are being hard done by - best thing to do is get your local M.P. involved and ask him to look at it for you... |

You have to be a British citizen to carry a British passport. That should surely be obvious to you.
And you pretty much admit that you're a sure fire candidate for citizenship, you just can't rustle up the £1000. (Can't you borrow it from somewhere?) As soon as you hand over the money and go through the process, full citizenship - and a British passport - will be yours.
Although I sympathise with your predicament, I certainly do not think you are being punished for anything. It was your CHOICE to move away from your country of origin and you have to accept the consequences of this. The same is true for anybody who chooses to live, work, and pay taxes in a country they aren't a citizen of - this isn't unique to Britain by any means. Millions of people worldwide are in the same boat. |

To get a passport you must first be a British citizen so if you want a British passport you will have to become British by nationality. Being just a resident is not enough. That´s just the rules. It´s the same in every country as far as I know. |

Sorry but if the law of this country asks you to go for a citizen ship test and pay £1000 for the forms and application you need to do this, in the end its worth it cos how many visa's will u keep buying in the end it will be more than the initial £1000 u invest to get the passport.

Get onto your MP and put the pressure on him...... They are desperate now for all the support they can get after all the latest scandal and will bend over backwards to help pending the possible future elections...
Write down all the points you can think off that will help you to explain to him how you feel so you don't miss important detail... Keep trying.... Good Luck |
