In Europe's Schengen countries, by way of derogation from Article 5 and Articles 7 to 13 of the Schengen Border Code, Heads of State and the members of their delegation, whose arrival and departure have been officially announced through diplomatic channels to the border guards, may not be subject to border checks.
I think a King of a country certainly has a passport since he may also travel for private grounds unannounced through diplomatic channels. |

They can have passports. Whether they need them or not depends on where they are going. As passports are used mainly to travel beyond borders, some countries might require passport and visa to enter that country regardless of the status of that person. Depending on the situation, Kings might need to have one passport. |

No, they only travel as official guests of another country, enjoy sovereign immunity and don't need passports. However there are "kings" not recognized by some or all other countries. They would need a passport for travel to countries where their status is not recognized. They might also use a passport if they are travelling "incognito" or under an assumed name for reasons of privacy. |
