no, she was absolutely wrong 4 yelling at him. she was just taking advantage of the situation and using her ignorance & hate towards a person she knew nothing about. that's the problem with the US today, instead of trying to help this man she treated him like sh*t and obviously thought it was OK to do it in front of u. she has some issues & if i were that guy la hubiera mandado a la ching@da. she is rude and ignorant. just goes to show u how shallow and ignorant grown @ss people r in the good ol USA. |

Your mother must keep in mind that her family also came from immigrants.. we are all immigrants unless you are a native American.. and that I cannot imagine because Native American people are some of the most accepting people of the world.
Remember that every time u are waiting for someone else... there are times when others have to wait on you |

No way. Perhaps she should have ordered a side of tolerance. Look at your history idiot. A lot of your early immigrants could not speak English.
How many languages do you speak??? Have you ever tried to learn to speak a language other than English? Its not easy
I can speak 3 |

I agree with your mother but being from New England I also think she has to chill. New Englanders for some unknown reason love to fight about everything no matter how big or small. |

Heck, don't see the point in yelling at someone because they can't speak the language ... I mean, your mom couldn't possibly know if the fellow was a tourist ... who was here on a 3 week holiday .... you can't assume that everyone who doesn't speak English actually LIVES here ... |

your mother should mind her own business and deal with her own problems that i'm sure are a lot |

good for her.
it gets on your nerves after awhile and then the ones that cant speak english get rude with us!

Your mom was wrong. Maybe that man just got to the U.S. and that's why he hasn't learned English yet. Besides, that's the best way to learn a language, to go out and talk to common people, in common situations. At least that man wasn't embarassed to try to speak! I think your mom was mean. I've seen a lot of people from the U.S. in Mexico, trying to speak Spanish, nobody can understand them, but we don't mock them, we don't say anything mean. C'mon that man only wanted breakfast, and your mom probably depressed him byt telling him that.
By the way, I don't live in New England...but just FYI we have Dunkin Donuts in Mexico. |

Since there is no law requiring you to speak English to live in this country, your mom is clearly in the wrong. Actually, people who take it upon themselves to yell at strangers are always in the wrong, but that's a whole other kettle of fish.
As a tourist abroad, I've had many an occasion where I've had trouble getting what I wanted due to trouble with the native tongue. And guess what, no one felt the need to scream at me about being in their country without speaking the language.
You should be embarrassed, and your mom should be ashamed of herself. |

WHETHER THERE IS A LANGUAGE BARRIER OR NOT. WHEN FOLKS ARE HUNGRY, WE HAVE A TENDENCY TO BECOME VERY IRRITABLE WHEN CONTROVERSY ARISE.
NO. YOUR MOM WAS NOT OUT-OF-LINE. |

I am sorry, but that was really rude. I think people coming over here should speak English but everyone needs to be nice. I rarely feel sorry for people who don't speak English in the U.S, but I feel bad for that man, how dehumanizing. |

Dont you think most of the Europeans or anyone from any country automatically spoke english when they first came over? Technically the english language isn't the native language in this country anyway, it came from england. Back in the day the Native Americans who had this country first had thier own language. This country is full of all kinds of nationalities and people from other countries are coming in every day. I think it's ignorant for you to think that everyone should be speaking english. |

ur mother have distrimination in that guy.... i believe that guy have to spoken english after long time live in that country....she's wrong....the problem of perception.... |

It does become frustrating. Look at it this way, If you went to their country to live, and did not take the time to learn their language, You better believe it would upset them. Patience is good, but, So many illegals are moving here, and are not taking time to learn OUR language. And, then, they are taking our jobs as well. |

no she wasnt wrong, i feel the same way. they put these people in the drive thur window here, it takes 30 minutes to give your order, they cant understand you and you cant understand them. and a lot of times, they dont give you all of your change. and then act like they dont know, what your talking about.i have pissed so many of them off, by asking does any body here speak english. a manager will come and ask very rudely , whats the problem?a lot of times i will just drive off, in the middle of trying to get one of these idiots to understand. |

no! that's way out of line! Think about what you're saying. that's like saying people can't go places if they can't speak the language. that's just mean. plus he probably could speak pretty good english just his accent was probably heavy...anyway, i don't know spanish, but i go to mexico to LEARN MORE. this was an idiotic thing to do, yelling at the poor person!
btw nashbridges dude is an idiot, don't listen.. |

Yes she is right to say it. English is our national language. If you were in Mexico and not in a tourist area they would expect you to speak Spanish! |

If he couldn't speak English, did he understand what she said?
From a political standpoint, if he entered the country legally, there is nothing we can do but hope that he learns English.
From another standpoint---did your mother ever think that helping him choose what he wanted---a vegetarian breakfast sandwich---might have been a more polite response than berating him? People around the world think Americans are impolite and rude---how better to change their point of view than to do it one person at a time? |

If you don't know the answer yourself you need more help than your Mother.
I have been to several countries where the people in line help me order politely with out suggesting that I leave their country becuase I didn't speak their country |

How can someone order a food item in English if they can't understand or speak English, and expect the clerk to comprehend what they're asking for? Would you try to order in a French restaurant when you can't speak or understand French and expect to be understood?
I think your mother is just fed up with so many foreigners filling our country and that was her way of letting that particular one know about it. When will these foreigners realize that they are not wanted or welcomed here? |

isn't that one of the freedoms that makes America what is is?Freedom of speach? I am sure that this is the first thing that people who only speak their language would hollar at us!
I say good for you MOM!!!Keep up the good work! The only way things will change for us is if people start speaking up! |

Maybe he was a tourist. My dad didn't speak a good enough English to become a US Citizen until I was 9 and he tried very hard. I ended up with an accent until I took speech (about 8 years old). Some people say I still have a little bit of an accent. Remember that unless you are 100% native american, everyone was foreign when they first came to america. the vote was 7-6 English over German for the language of our constitution. Imagine what would have happened all the history if the vote went the other way. |

that was really mean of your mother to say that. i understand that she was just stressed out and angry for waiting so long to get her food, but no excuses. its mean to tell someone to go back to their country. why if he was just visiting? why if your mother goes out of the USA to visit on a trip and that happens to her? how would she feel? you should tell your mother to control what she says. people come to america to have a better life. someone who just arrives to america cant speak well english that fast. my husband cant speak very well and he has been here for over a year alsmot. but he is learning. and if that would of happend to someone i know in front of my face i would of snapped that persons neck off. sorry to be mean. but it bothers me when people say things to others like what your mom said. how sad of her. |

The US treaty of Hidalgo (1848) guarantees all US "Mexican" inhabitants and their ancestors the right to their culture and language. Google it.

No. It was rude. She wasn't hurting her.
I think everyone who stays here should learn English the official language. But I don't put a time limit on it. |

Wow... you all are quite ruse, the simple fact is, that it is not the mothers fault, or the gentleman who couldnt speak english's fault. It was simply lack of education on all parts, granted the mother could have been a little less stressed in the way she spoke to the man, but it does not mean ANY of you should make such cruel remarks about her... how are you any better than what you claim her to be?? THIS is not a problem with America, its a problem with the whole world (Im Australian just FYI) I honestly do not see how slandering someone's mother was the right thing to do and you should all be ashamed. Now, about your question, your mother could have shown a little respect for diversity and understood that this man is not purposely trying to make her life difficult, he just wanted a meal... The gentleman obviously needs better education with English speaking communication, however English is extremely hard to learn and the fact that he was able to communicate at all? good on him for trying, its just sad that one of his first experiences has to be one that he is being yelled at... But dont lower yourselves and verbally spit on this woman, perhaps encourage a better education of her act, we all make mistakes, now lets learn from them. |
