It's amazing looking at some of the names. I thought this was a hard question and could only think of Isabel Allende, the beautiful Chilean author. But I never, shame on me, thought of Jesus.

Michael Portillo, former British conservative Minister, and broadcaster, is the son of a socialist refugee from Franco's spain (Ironic- given the conservatives are to the right of the political spectrum and have anti-immigration views).

Rolf Shilde came to this country from war torn Germany as a refugee with Â£5 in his pocket and eventually founded the Huntleigh Healthcare company in Luton ( Still going ), he became a multi millionaire. I met him before he died, a very nice but humble man.

Perhaps the most famous here in UK was Karl Marx.

I cannot add a name to the list, but as I was growing up the news was very much full of the fate of the 'Vietnamese Boat People'. This was obviously at a time when I was still particularly sensitive to the plight of the refugee. The word still brings to mind those scenes of brilliant early TV reporting which brought the apparent hopelessness of their situation into my awareness for the first time.
I wholeheartedly support any campaign for Refugee Week, good on you for that.

I remember seeing a piece of excellent graffiti stencilled near my home, which said - "Refugees Rock" - with a list of famous names underneath.

Forgive me these are almost all political refugees and many are exiles, some famous for the wrong reasons.
Kaiser Wilhelm II - Netherlands after defeat of the Second Reich
Sigmund Freud - fleeing Nazi anti-semitism
Rudolf Hess - sought refuge in the UK, was imprisoned and sent back after WWII
The Norwegian Royal Family - following Nazi occupation of Norway
General Charles de Gaulle - leader of the Free French after the fall of France, second world war.
Georgi Markov - victim of the Bulgarian Umbrella assassination, famous for his assassination.
Prince Remigius Kanagarajah of Jaffna - he was on BBC show undercover Princes, and exiled Tamil.
The Dalai Lama - exlile to India.
The late Benazir Bhutto - exiled from Pakistan, assasinated upon her return.

Thats all the ones I can think of, I've racked my brains as hard as I could.
