Am I responsible for a cell phone bill that my son ran up?
Find answers to your legal question.

Am I responsible for a cell phone bill that my son ran up?

I got my son a cell phone in my name with my social security number and credit. The bill went to his house in his name. He did not like the service so he cancelled it. The final bill was over 500 dollars and has now been sent to collections. The collections bill was sent to him in his name. Who is responsible for paying it, and whose credit will be affected?

If the phone is in YOUR NAME with YOUR SOCIAL, YOUR CREDIT will be the one that's affected.

If it shows up on YOUR credit and HE was the one who used the phone, you should take him to small claims court if you can't get the money out of him otherwise, but GET IT PAID!

Yours will, the bill and such was in your name not your sons so the bill is yours. You did the favor for your son now your stuck with it. It's really too bad. Has your son said he would pay you back for this or is he saying to bad so sad?

You should have gotten something in writting that your son was going to be responsible for the bill; which I'm sure you didn't do. Pay the bill learn a lesson and move on.

Dysturbed
You are responsible to pay for it. Let me explain, the reason we have co-signers is to guarantee the company that they will receive payment. If not from your son, then from you. You will ultimately be held responsible even more so if he is a minor. Next time, don't co-sign make him get his own. Your credit will ultimately be effected.

"my name with my social security number and credit"

you are responsible, especially if you signed/co-signed the contract..

not only that, but your credit rating is being severely damaged, even as we speak

as for him, he has no (legal) responsibility for paying it..

How old is your son? If he is older than 18 than legally he is responsible...did he have your permission to use your name and credit in the name of the cell phone? If not then he is also legally responsible.

If he is older than 18 than yes it is all on him

Lady A
If it's under your name, social and credit then your credit score will be the one affected. He SHOULD be responsible for paying the bill. If he won't you can take him to small claims court, but it will still be on your credit.

well who runs a bill up that high i wud cancle it

Your credit will be affected so the creditors are going to look at you as being responsible for it. In all honesty though, HE should be the one responsible to pay for it. But if you want to proctect your credit, and he refuses to pay it, you might as well bite the bullet & just pay it; at least then its off your credit and you can work it out w/ him later (have him pay you back or what not)

morokasvaklempt
WELL. the real question here is did you know that he was using your credit and social?? i dont think youre responsible for the charges put on the credit but, you knew that this was going on so if hes in collections with your name yes. your credit will be effected.

Meg
yours will but he should pay it it is only right for him too if not he is a poor excuse of a son

reneem1954_2000
If it is in your name and credit, it will be yours. Sorry. He should be good to you and pay on it or make arrangements. If not, you may have to take him to court.

Scott H
Uh, yeah...it sounds like your name is on the contract. You are ultimately responsible for the bill. You pay it and then collect from him. If he's over 18, let him acquire his own cell phone.

YOU SIGNED FOR IT, YOU GOTTA PAY IT.;...ALL YOU CAN DO IS TAKE HIM TO CIVIL COURT.

Sadly if its your name you are the responsible party. I've been through this with two family members in the past. You might be able to get the money out of him eventually since it is your son but until the bill is settled with collections they will come after you. Best of luck.

The bill is in your name so it goes on your credit. If you want your money from him you'll have to take him to court, because as far as the cell company is concerned you bought the phone and you owe them.

If the phone was in your name, you are liable to pay for the bill. Tell your son to give you the money for the bill!

ctscott206
Unfortunately, you are. If it was in your name you are responsible. Sorry!

You are responsible to pay the cel company but you can sue your son in small claims court for the cash. If you dont pay it will go on your credit.

billnted
If you got the cell phone in your name I would imagine it will be your resonsibility to pay for it.

Jack W
with your SS number and credit history attached to it you will ultimately be responsible. sorry.

Technically you are on paper. If you want him to pay and he refuses you will have ti sue him in court. Since its in your name the company cannot do anything to him.

Heart of fire
you said the magic word " under your name" you have to pay
