Hit and Run Accident; I ran?

Hit and Run Accident; I ran?

I feel absolutely horrible about this: I recently got involved in a hit and run accident where I was the one that ran.

I stopped to exit out of a grocery store when somebody behind me was pressing his horn several times so I panicked and drove to an opening between two islands to make a turn into the lanes going the opposite direction. I was already anxious at this point, I edged forward a little bit and a truck hit my car around the front headlight. I believe the truck hit me around its side area.

At this point I was scared out of my life and I immediately drove off on impulse. It wasn't until I got home and calmed down that I realized what I just did. I'm now wishing I stayed.

The damage on my car is minor, I received some bad damage to the plastic covering on my car around my headlight but the light itself is still functional.

I realize I just committed a felony but I'm not sure what I can do. I feel like turning myself in but I could put myself and my family in an inescapable financial rut.

I currently live in an area without bus stops, so I need my car to get to the university which is over half an hour away. I'm on a 5000+ loan for school. What can I do?
Additional Details
To some who have asked:

I think I may have been the one at fault here. I would believe the truck had right of way since I was going straight. I was approaching into the lane when the car collided.

If I were you I'd probably try to pretend like it never happened. You are on a fixed income and it sounds like you should avoid a long drawn out insurance thing. Try to not use your car as much as the cops could be looking for it.

you live and you learn, these are events you cant readily everyday prepare for. Whats done is done you drove off, and made a bad choice. you'll sweat it for a few days, if anyone saw you if you don't hear anything after a week just learn from it.

BTW turning yourself in will do nothing for you at this point. The police aren't your counselors or friends there job is to arrest and process you. the lowering of a charge is solely on the dicisson of a judge, who will go by law and facts. So turning yourself in is just as bad as getting caught.

well go to the police explain the whole story. say your sorry. if you go to the police before they find you you'll be in less trouble. you'll probley get sued or have to pay a ticket. but at least your doing the right thing...

p.s. you shouldnt have posted this

Call the police and tell them what happened. They'll be much easier with you if you just call them and say you freaked out. Relax, you're not going to jail, and you won't lose your license. But I'd be surprised if insurance will pay for your damages.

Matt
you'll prolly be fine. for it to come back to you this is what needs to have happened. someone had to get your plates AND the truck driver reports it to the police AND he has access to your plate numbers because either he got them or talked to the person that did get them AND the truck driver decides to press charges AND you get pulled over AND the cop runs your plates when he pulls you over AND he notices that come up, he still might not bother to do anything about it.

anyway, unless you killed someone, hit and run is a misdemeanor and you will likely have the option of either a ticket or community service if you were to get caught.

just live your life and forget about it. a year from now you'll be glad you did and probably also realize how ineffective our police departments are.

disclaimer: i'm not responsible for anything you do. don't get me arrested for advising you to break the law.

if you are a respectable good person you would turn yourself in.

what if the shoe was on the other foot? think about the other person.

**why am i getting thumbs down?? it called being an honest and decent person who takes responsibility for their actions(even if is a little late!)

Aaron-you must be young, I assume, since you are on your dad's insurance. At this stage in your life you can decide what type of person you want to be and what type of decisions you want to make for yourself. Make the right choice no matter how difficult it may be.

Stuff like this has happened to me before. Keep calm, and turning yourself in may seem like a good idea but don't, thats probably the stupidest thing you could do, you'll only end up in trouble, the cops arn't going to have a spec of sympathy for you. Just think about it, right now everything is pretty much fine for the most part but as soon as you turn yourself in your in trouble. Don't do it.

I'm pretty sure that's illegal.

You should go to the police.

Paul
Just relax and forget about it
DO NOT turn yourself in. police have no sympathy.

It is not fair for someone else to have to pay for something that is not their fault. What if their financial situation is tougher than yours? It would be better for you to turn yourself in before a cop shows up at your door. Sounds like there easily could have been witnesses... Do the responsible thing: turn yourself in.

Andrew's Revenge
turn yourself in and the police will reduce your charges a lot, but say goodbye to your license for a while

Go back to the store where you did all this If the person didn't have insurance they would have simply left due to the fact that they should have not been there(because the car should have not been on the road) and there by you would not have hit them kinda deal.

Yea hope for that cause other then them not having insurance your pretty much messed up.

But yea go back to the store where it happened and ask around. If they did make a deal out of it they have made a report or have left there info.

Note a parking lot is private property and there for there are some interesting rules depending on the state.

If you are in trouble contact a attorney and see what they can do. It is worth the couple hundred it may cost.

Goodluck

it would be best to turn urself in...if they took your lisence plate number and report it won't the outcome be even worse?

If they find you it will be much worse than if you turn yourself in. And they WILL find you.

the person probably has insurance. Turn yourself in if you feel you need to get the guilt off your chest or eventually the guilt will go away and you will look back and laugh about this and say "man, I'm glad I didn't turn myslef in because I would have been a broke ***"

White Stone
Is this a serious question? If so.....you should turn yourself in, because If someone saw you and got your tag number....you could be in BIG time trouble. But, then again, it sounds like the truck hit you instead of you hitting him even if you were going the wrong way. Next time just stay and talk to the other person, you might be able to work it out without the police.

MidnightBlue
Too late now, just leave it & hope nobody comes knocking for you!

It's not like someone was hurt so don't dwell on it

First, this does not qualify as a felony.
Was the accident on private property or the public roadway. In most states, leaving without notification is a traffic violation, whether it is on public or private property. Do you have insurance, do you plan on having your car repaired? Your description of what happens lacks details, was the truck parked or moving? If the other driver got your license number, you can expect a visit from the police and you will be cited for leaving the scene. Plus the truck operator can make a claim against your insurance for the damage.
From your description, I can't determine who had the right of way, the truck driver may think the accident was his fault and might have been.
You can either go to the police or wait and hope for the best.

Find the person you hit. And fast.
Quite an interesting situation, a guilty hit and runner.

Go the nearest police station and explain.
