Find answers to your legal question.

I've had my driving license less than a week now, and i've been caught speeding...?

I was doing roughly 37mph in a 30mph zone,
what will my punishment be? will i receive 3 points, and be able to keep driving, or will i get more points? and have my license taken off me?

Thanks

Thanks for all the replies, i wrote this earlier for my friend, and he's happy with the responses, as i'd made him believe he was gonna have to retake all his tests again, which worried him. i'm shocked at the attitude of some of the users on here though..

Anyway, he was driving past Leicester Prison, by the Tigers Stadium, and its a 4 lane road, so he just assumed it was a 40mph road, as the area isn't really built up, and is never really full of pedestrians except for when the Rugby and football are on.

My friends 18, so obviously a bit naive on the road...saying that... i'm 18, and i've been driving over a year now, and never had a brush with the law, never had a near miss with another car, and never been caught speeding.

Anyone on here who replied calling him a stupid kid or whatever, is obviously an angel who has never sped? if not, then they're hypocrites clearly.

Thanks to all the decent replies!

U needed to tell us what state ur in and are u a teenager or an adult getting their license for the 1st time...usally it's points but a stern DA or judge can pull the license if they want. So unless ur mature enough to drive and be responsible u better take the bus!

If ur a kid, good student and have no history of misbehavior the DA might be willing to reduce. If I was ur Mom, get a lawyer and get this dismissed. But if u do, you'll have to not get another speeding ticket or your insurance will skyrocket. There r so many scenario's for ur situation. U do not want insurance points and develop a bad driving record. Cause it will haunt u for many years and lead u down a horrible path where u'll could accidentally kill someone or worse yourself.

You were speeding and you are new to driving, you will probably lose your licence and have to re-take your test.
Hopefully you will learn for next time.

You wont loose your license but you will be fined and your insurance will go up. But you should go to court about it because sometimes the police officer that pulled you over wont be able to make the court date so the judge at that point will offer you a lesser amount to pay. Doesn't always work but its worth a shot.
Good Luck

I hope so you irresponsible oaf.
Yeah, I'm obviously an angel. Idiot. I don't drive so obviously I've never been caught speeding. The speed limits are there for a reason you know. Even if that area has few pedestrians you should still abide by the law and keep to the speed limit. When people like your friend start thinking that if there's not likely to be any pedestrians there then it's OK to go a bit faster, then that's when accidents happen. Grow up and be a bit more responsible.

You're not going to lose your license for that, but your insurance may possibly go up. They should have given you a court date....go to court on that date. Normally, they'll even knock a couple of points off just because you showed up. They'll tell you your punishment there....7 miles over is really not that bad. Don't worry too much about it, it happens.

Get a bus timetable, for breaking the law so soon you will have your licence revoked and have to take a retest.

Depends on the jurisdiction. 7 mph is 11.27 km/h. In Ontario you need to be exceeding the speed limit by 15 km/h to get points. You'd only be facing a fine (no points) here.

serves you right !!!!!!!!!!
you will get 3 points a fine probably 80 quid
and if you do it again within 2 years your off the road...
having said that drive sensibly and enjoy driving and dont put any more money in the government coffers.......

I know someeone who always speeds, and has never recieved any fine or had any crash. In fact people who tootle along doing 20mph are the dangerous ones he says.
Obviously he doesnt speed through the 30 feet that your not allowed to speed through underneath those speed cameras.

I suspect you will get 3 points but I have to ask whether you exceeded the limit in a dangerous area - say near a school or in a place where even 30 might be considered dangerous.
I would suggest you take great care in future, otherwise, your license will be taken from you. Also I wonder whether you are on a provisional license and a learner driver?

Hello, the answer is quiet simple. If you were caught by a speed camera you will get 3 points and a £60 fine. Your driving licence will show SP30 on the paper part and you must declare this to your insurance. If you were caught by traffic poilce will then they will throw the book at you, you'll go to court they will do you for reckless drving, driving without due care and attention, speeding ect ect. Good luck and remeber speed kills. Hit them at 30mph and there is an 80% chance of living hit them at 40 and there's an 80% of them dying. YOU WERE CLOSE TO 40!

3 points... if you go over double the speed of the speed limit then you loose your license for 3 years

Assuming you're in the UK, 3 points, and a £40-60 fine, and increased insurance costs (you MUST tell them, as others have said). You won't lose your licence this time, but the points will stay on your licence for three years, and if you get to 6 points (as a new driver, once you've been driving a few years the limit rises to 12) it will mean your licence is revoked and you'll have to do another test, so make sure you're not caught again!

. 3 points and a £60 fine. BTW If you don't tell your insurance company your policy will be null and void if you need to make a claim. Ignorance is NO defence

3 points and £60 fixed penalty. A bit silly but I suppose that as you have passed a test then you believe you have become a good driver overnight. I hope this is a lesson you will remember and do not speed again. Your insurance will go up by about 20% when you renew it for the next 3 years.

you get 3 points. if u get 6 in your first 2 years of passing u get banned and have to retake your test!

you'll get 2 points and a fine plus your insurance will go up

You might get 3 points or offered the speed awareness course but I'm not exactly sure. Don't speed next time it's not worth losing points, paying fines and risking other peoples lives.

my husband is a driving instructor and i have asked his opionion on your problem, he has advised me that you would recieve 3/6 points and either a 30/60 pound fine depending on the judges discression, as it is only a minor traffic offence, eg you were only 7 miles over you should still be able to drive and you should keep your licence. as long as you dont go stupid as the 1st 2 years are probation you should have no problem maintaining your licence. hope this helps?

Tracy L
you will get 3 points on your license and a £40 fine. For the first 2 years of having a license you only have 6 points on it, in other words get one more penalty for something and you have to take your driving test again!!!!!! whoops!

3 points, £60 fine and an increase in your insurance premium as you must tell them otherwise your insurance will be invalid.
