What does 'commuting' mean on car insurance?

LittleBarb
commuting usually means the distance between home and your place of employment---if you DRIVE your car to WORK.... insurance is usually higher because the risk is higher if you COMMUTE to work....

Commuting means

"Travelling to and from a FIXED place of business" (NB FIXED)

So if you work at an office then travel to that office is commuting. If the boss then asks you to travel to another office then that is NOT commuting but business use. Similarly if you are a regional manager going to different offices each day you would need a wider cover than just commuting.

Please note that some insurance companies regard commuting as pleasure and others differentiate between commuting and not commuting, so I advise you to check with your insurance broker to confirm that your policy allows you to travel to and from work.

The drive to your place of work and back home.........

Insuring you car for Social, Domestic & Pleasure usually includes the trip to work and back. However, if you use the car for going on jobs for your employer you are not covered. You have to declare these to your insurance provider.
See the Yahoo home page about 2.5 million drivers not covered due to incorrect info to their insurance provider.

Commuting is usually traveling (driving) from home to work/school. This is a factor that is taken into consideration when obtaining insurance. Depending on how far you have to travel between these two points, your rates are adjusted. The further apart, the higher the rate. However, people sometimes have "pleasure" vehicles meaning they don't drive it to work or school. They only use it once in awhile. Don't use this to get a lower rate as these types of vehicles usually mean you have more than one.

I hope this helps.

Commuting means that you are using your vehicle to drive all or part of your journey to work. By part of the journey, i mean if you for instance drive to the train station, park it at the station all day & then catch a train for the rest of your journey.Don't omit from telling your insurers, even if you only do it occasionly as it is a "material fact" which you will have signed on the proposal form as true & may invalidate your policy. You should also know that with the motor insurance database which the police have access to, lists the insurer of your vehicle, drivers, & the use, so they can also penalise you if you are using it for the wrong purpose. Hope this helps.

Commuting is the transporting between home and place of work, don't panic. It shouldn't effect your premium, but don't make the mistake of saying you use your car for work if travelling to and from is all you do. If you have any worries about it, simply contact the quote provider and ask if it will have any effect. They're not ogres, and they will answer all your questions truthfully, so long as you do the same in return. Don't be tempted to omit details, because if you have an accident and they have suspicion that you're commuting when you haven't declared it, they may not pay out.

'Dr Greene'
Commuting is defined as the journey to and from a single, regular place of employment.
