If he will be driving a car that has no payments on it(ie- it's 100% paid in full), he can get liability insurance which shouldn't be that expensive.
However, if any money is owed on the car, you're going to have to have an upgraded ins. policy which will be rather expensive.
I am a 19 y/o female with one "at fault" wreck on my record and I pay $79/month for liability.
My best advice is to call around to independent agents, they are generally less expensive. You should be able to go to an online phonebook and search "auto insurance" and a ton of numbers will come up. |

Did you ask you insurance agent about listing him as an occasional driver? Put the car and insurance in your name. As long as the vehicle is insured, I'm not sure it matters who is driving if there is an accident. My parents did this when I was young. Not sure how it works where you are. I'm assuming Europe maybe since you're talking pounds and not dollars. Everything about driving is getting more expensive all the time. Good luck! |

Make sure the car has a small engine and a low value, this will make a big difference.
If you make yourself the main driver and him a named driver, it will almost always make it significantly cheaper.
Direct Line was the bet quote I found, hey arent on price comparison sites though. It would cost me (at 17) £670 pa for a 1.1L ford focus value £500, with my mum as the main driver |

insure the car in your name and again add him as a named driver |

Try putting yourself or someone else with a clean drivers license as the "named driver" I did and it took mine down by about £300. Totally legal.
Unfortunately your son has fallen stereotype of the "boy racer"
Good luck xxxx
Also are u searching for fully comp or 3rd party fire and theft? |
|

just me
 |
try direct line they were good for me..but it also depends on the car.
Plus it would be alot cheaper if you or your hubby had the car insurance in your name and your son as a 2nd driver this is what my husband done for me it was half the price...
Good luck |

I just did a term paper on this, so hears my best shot.
Try to get a car with high safety ratings. Dual airbags and (automatic) seatbelts help. Try to get something a little older, but not to old. Pick a car that you would want to drive when you were his age, but make it affordable to you as well. Good grade discounts and driving classes also knock off the price a bit. |

The cheapest solution could be to insure yourself as the main driver, and have your son as a 'named' or secondary driver.
Some insurance companies will even award 'named' drivers no claims discount.
Also, www.confused.com is a really good car insurance comparison site.
Good luck! |

My Brother is 17 and my mom has him on hers, but then the cost went up on my moms and dads. It all depends on the car. My bro has a honda civic hatchback and its 127 a month. |

You can search for more than just one quote, some might be cheap some more expensive. |

The problem is firstly his age, secondly the fact that he's a he.
I'm a second driver on my boyfriends’ car, (provisional, 23 and female) and it only costs an extra £40 a year. I know it's discrimination but the insurance company see a young lad as dangerous that’s just the way it is.
If you put you down as the main driver and him as a second driver, it'll be a lot cheaper. (Some companies will also let him accumulate no claims.) |

I just wish that people who don't know anything about insurance wouldn't try and stick their oar in and give advice.
Insurance is too complicated a product to buy without professional advice as witness all these 'advisors' recommending that you commit a criminal (YES CRIMINAL) act by 'fronting' the insurance in your name.
I assume you are far too sensible to so this. As for QD. Why are they quoting a price about a quarter of the market average? Insurers aren't making money on 19 year olds at £1900 pounds so how could Quinn? |

I believe some insurance companies offer reduced premiums if certain conditions are accepted, such as an annual mileage limit, or a sort of curfew (no driving after about 10pm, enforced with satellite technology). |

Young male drivers have the most accidents, therefore they must contribute the most to the 'pool'.
Do not listen to anybody that tells you to insure it in your name with you as the main driver and him as a second driver. As far as making a claim is concerned, you may as well have not bothered taking out insurance.
You just have to grin and bear it I'm afraid. |
|

?!
|
thats the price he pays for being in the insurance age bracket that costs the insurance companies the most. when he is 21 the rates will drop but only if he has a good driving record. |

My son was 19 last year when he was learning to drive. We bought him a Renault Clio 1.1 and it cost £520 for insurance in his name with me as a named driver. When he passed his test it went up another £120 as he was no longer supervised and was seen as more of a risk.
The insurance company was www.quinndirect.co.uk They were the cheapest by far.
Edit* Don't insure him on your policy as a named driver, the sooner he has a policy in his name and starts earning no claims the better!
Also if you take out the insurance in your name you have to have the car registered to you! |

what sort of car are you planning on letting him drive? anything thats fast and new will be extremely expensive to insure. you are better off looking at small cars, like peugeot 106 or 206, smart cars, toyota aygo, etc etc. these are small groups and cost less to insure. the toyota aygo should also be less to get tax on too.
then go to confused.com and do some quotes - i wouldn't put a high voluntary excess on...it will make the premium more, but young drivers have ridiculous comp excesses (mine is currently approx. £400) and in the case of a claim, a lot has to come out of your pocket to get anything back.
try and find a company who will do accelerator no claims discount.....when i first got my car, i joined diamond, and did a 6 month accelerator. basically, your insurance runs for 6 months, and you get a year no claims discount, as long as you have no accidents. if you can stay claim free, then you can get your no claims discount built up and watch the premium drop!
it is expensive, and i cant really think of any companies to recommend who currently favour young drivers. endsleigh have lot of ads aimed at young people right now, but that doesn't mean they are cheapest...
good luck!
EDIT: please please please don't put yourself as main driver and him as named. this is called "fronting" and is against the law. if he has an accident, and it emerges he should be the main driver, you will get nothing for the claim. it is not worth the risk. |
