I got caught shoplifting, what will happen?
Find answers to your legal question.

I got caught shoplifting, what will happen?

Also, would it be worth attending the court hearing? It's not required...
Additional Details
Okay, first of all, please don't tell me that I shouldn't have done it. Because, I already know that. We all make mistakes, it's life.

Here is the situation:

* I stole from Kohl's, and got caught (along with a friend)
* Combined the merchandise was about 200-300 dollars
* We got taken in and questioned, then issued a ticket by the police for around 400 dollars
*Kohl's is also issuing a ticket/banned for all Kohl's
*I am 19 and so is my friend

On job applications will we have to check the box saying we've been arrested? The Kohl's loss prevention guy, said that we wouldn't have to because it was a "citation". I'm not sure exactly what that means...

Also, I was wondering if now we would be considered "criminals". And would there be any letters coming from the police station to my house? Then my parents could find it...Maybe someone had experienced this, and could share. Because right now, we are really scared. Thanks a lot!

Why do all the shoplifters come whining to this forum asking what is going to happen to them. They are going to be smacked around for being stupid.

Wow... well you're probably going to jail, as scary as that sounds. I believe that's a misdemeanor, under $500 but you can look it up online because I think it depends on what state you live in. As long as it is your first offense ever (no drug use in the past, for example) then you might get off with no jail time and just a big fine or probation or something. This is a serious crime, and the last thing you should be worried about is letters coming to your house. Your parents are going to find out, and if I were you I would just tell them because maybe they can help. I'm sorry if you're frightened, but this is true. Real people really go to jail for the same thing you just described. I know when you're a kid it's hard to imagine that real people go to jail, but "that's life."

I am not a lawyer and none of my comments are legal advice. I do not have any legal expertise. The comments expressed in this question are merely my speculative opinions and I accept no responsibility for any damages caused by them.

I know a couple people who got caught shoplifting at Kohl's. And heard stories about other peoples experiences shoplifting there. Everybody gets caught there. that's the one place you do not want to steal from. sounds easy, but not. Since the people i knew were under 18 nothing that bad happened to them. they made them put back the stuff and got their information and informed their parents..no court or jail or volunteer service was required. Since your 19, i don't know what will happen to you..

We all don't make these kinds of mistakes in life. Yes, we make mistakes. Not criminal acts, though.

This will be on your record forever. So kiss any future job that requires a background check goodbye, which is any real job. And judging by what you wrote, it won't be your last offense anyway.

Yes, there will be documentation coming to your home but it will be addressed to you since you're over 18. I do hope your parents still find out. They know to know about the criminal living under their roof.

Hope this helps.

Not sure about the letters though, I would call the people u gave ur address to and ask. C if you can have any letters forwarded to someone else. good luck and just learn by this mistake, thats all u can do!!
