MUST KNOW #77
I knew about the red light on cars, but not the #77. It was about 1:00 p.m. in the afternoon, and Lauren was driving to visit a friend. An UNMARKED police car pulled up behind her and put his lights on. *Lauren's parents have always told her never to pull over for an unmarked car on the side of the road, but rather to wait until they get to a gas station, etc. *
Lauren had actually listened to her parents advice, and promptly called #77 on her cell phone to tell the police dispatcher that she would not pull over right away. She proceeded to tell the dispatcher that there was an unmarked police car with a flashing red light on his rooftop behind her. The dispatcher checked to see if there were police cars where she was and there weren't, and he told her to keep driving, remain calm and that he had back up already on the way.
Ten minutes later 4 cop cars surrounded her and the unmarked car behind her. One policeman went to her side and the others surrounded the car behind. They pulled the guy from the car and tackled him to the ground. The man was a convicted rapist and wanted for other crimes.
I never knew about the #77 Cell Phone Feature, but especially for a woman alone in a car, you should not pull over for an unmarked car. Apparently police have to respect your right to keep going to a safe & quiet place. You obviously need to make some signals that you acknowledge them (i.e. put on your hazard lights) or call #77 like Lauren did.
Too bad the cell phone companies don't generally give you this little bit of wonderful information.
*Speaking to a service representative at ** Bell ** Mobility confirmed that #77 was a direct link to OPP Dispatch. So, now it's your turn to let your friends know about #77.
Send this to every woman (and person) you know; it may save a life. |

In no way does this sound like a legal stop.
Are you sure this person was a police officer?
No matter what the case or cause a real police officer would ask for your drivers license.
I would contact the police station immediately and give them as much information as you can on this person. |

he is supposed to have probable cause in pulling you over. Obviously he could not see your eyes when he was following behind you before he pulled you over. Did he say you were weaving or changing lanes without a signal? Speeding? He can;t search your car without probable cause. You may have a gripe here. Know your rights always! |

Ain't sure what he was hoping for BUT you should ask for the police complaint ombudsman |

They were hoping you would break down and tell them you had a kilo of coke in the trunk. They actually get some idiots who are guilty to admit their guilt when badgered like that. I guess you were supposed to say "gee officer I did a few lines earlier but I am ok now really" . But yes that is pretty standard. The questions about work were just to test your truthfulness. He didn't need to check them out. He could tell you were telling the truth. |

Do you, by chance, live in a small town or outer suburb? Are you a white person driving in the ghetto or a person of race driving in a nice area?
Cops harass in these cases. They don't necessarily have a reason to pull you over, they just do. In small towns, they get bored and love to see the fear in kids' eyes. I lived in a ghetto area for a time and was pulled over a few times for being white. They assume I was there to buy drugs, I guess.
If it happens again, ask them why they were pulling you over. They'll make something up like "failure to signal" because most people do. I always signal, so I know they're full of BS. |

Late at night......well could be a few things since its so late he may have assumed that you may be coming from a party, or there could a been a resembalance of your vehical, and was just doing a check, or maybe its a sicko cop, the best thing is go to the police station tell them what happened the time and all the whole proto call he did. and just ask say you are curious of why you were pulled over, then you got them checking into it with that officer. |

JOHNNY TRU ,a question ..What is the differnce between a GHETTO and a nice area ,according to all the do-gooders on here we are all one and places like GHETTOS do not exist ,we are all equal .these do-gooders should visit some of these Ghettos Bradford and Southall for two and they wouild then know that ghettos really do exist and thats where our country is going to finish up as one big GHETTO,I suppose this will be yet another Violation order,,,,,,,oh dear wrists slapped again, |

Perhaps he was testing to see if you could answer questions that may be difficult to answer under the influence of drugs. |

All you give is name address and licence.Or show it at a police station.
I would contact my local station and give the time it happened so they
will be able to locate whoever it was.Tell the person your concerned at
the information you gave after thinking about it.You say he was alone.
Was he a real copper? |

All the thicket of American answers are quite wrong. Ian UK is right. |

Okay, despite what you get in the way of other answers, here is the most logical explanation.
He lied to you about not stopping you because of the music festival. He knew about the music festival and thought he could make a DUI or drug possession case.
He used the excuse of you pulling away slowly from the red light as reasonable suspicion of intoxication to pull you over.
He could not smell alcohol or drugs on you and was repeating his questions in an attempt to get you to give different answers, a sure sign of intoxication.
He did not have the right to search your car beyond looking into the passenger compartment for safety reasons, unless he was going to arrest you.
He asked the personal information in order to fill out a FIR (Field Interview Report). This is done to document who was stopped, where they were stopped, and why they were stopped in case something comes up later. The employer is a part of the form.
Frisking anyone they stop is standard officer safety procedure.
From the sound of it, he was looking for a cheap bust, but failed to get it. |

Did you violate a traffic law? Why were you pulled over? He doesn't even have the right to ask you to get out of your vehicle unless you did something wrong. You did not have to answer any of those questions. You were harrassed and I would report it to your local police dept.. It may not go anywhere but if he does this routinely it would definately be investigated if more people reported incidents like this. If it came up again with someone else and both of your reports were on file it could be investigated and his out of line behavior may stop.
Always question authority. |

that is odd.
on the spot check
but they only do that if you did something they (he) found odd and then investigated. |

The "point" of this exercise was to violate your constitutional rights.
The cop did not have the right to search your vehicle (unless he arrested you, or saw illegal drugs or weapons (google for "in plain sight")).
Watch this video at least three or four times. Take notes. Memorise it.

Possible reasons:
*Trying to fill a quota
*You looked suspicious, maybe profiling
*Tried to see if you could respond coherently
*Didn't have anything better to do |

Did he show you his badge?
Did you ask for it?
Did you get his name?
If I were you, I'd make sure that A) nothing's missing from the car, and B) phone the police department with these details and anything you remember about the police/car.
I hate to say it, but you may have just been had. |

seems to be like he was just exercising his authority. I am not completely sure if what he was doing was 100% legal either. He doesn't need to know where you work, or if you work at all. Thats really none of his business.
I'd look into that. Call the precinct he was from or the county. Question it. Don't let that go by. Doesn't sound completely legit. |

if u are in the uk then this is not allowed, the police have to have an excuse to randomly pull u over such as one of yr lights not working or u breaking a driving rule. u should have noted his details and complained. |

You said BOOT not TRUNK so you're probably in the UK.
But here in the US... the cop would have been FISHING. In the US he would already have ran your plates and knew who the car belonged to. |

Some love to have a power trip, and honestly they think they can do whatever they want. Your best bet would have been to grab his badge number and report it. Just be careful he was prob just trying to check ya out, but if you notice him around alot more often def seek help. |

maybe he likes you and wants to show up at your work or something.... |

If you remember his name or car number I would consult with your local police station and question them.
it seems to me as if he was harassing you for no reason. |
