How can you have this kind of view on abortion?

How can you have this kind of view on abortion?

I hear people say that they wouldn't get an abortion, but think other people have the right to do it. What? It's like...

Let's say you assert you are against slavery, but you advocate the right of your neighbor to own slaves. You are, in fact, "pro-choice" regarding slavery, but what sort of a "choice" is this? One cannot be "pro-choice" without also being "pro whatever the choice is about."

Hmmm... I suppose if they were in the position to look after a child and other people weren't then it would make sense... still there is always adoption.

I suppose the view only counts for the individual person though, if someone else wants to abort their child you can't do anything about it except know that you wouldn't abort a child yourself, which makes the difference.

Here is how it makes sense:
My wife and I are pro-choice, but we also want children of our own, so we would not abort a pregnancy.
Choice is always about having options. In fact, that's the very definition of choice. You can abort, or you can not abort.

How that does not make sense? It's pretty clear to me.

i also don;t care if people smoke weed even if i don;t

is that so hard to understand?

most of us don;t think a brainless clump of cells qualifies as "a baby"

if it makes you feel better i would be willing to experiment on human embryos and would have absolutely no problem with it

That girl
It's a personal choice. You may not want to do something, but who are you to say if it's right for someone else? I do not agree with abortion (other than rape victims, incest, or the mother health at risk). BUT that is MY views, other people have different views. I am pro-choice though, I CHOOSE not to have abortions :)

K
Because it is not my job to press my belifes on others. It is entirly different from slavery. You probably don't know people who have been raped or became pregnant whose parents would literally kill them. You ae lucky that you don't have to worry about such things. Some people's father's rape them. Is it that girl's choice to become pregnant? No it's not. Was she being irresponsible? No she wasn't? The mother comes first. If someone at the age of thirteen becomes pregnant because of something like that (which can permantly damage their body at such a young age) then they should not carry the baby. Other times the mother would die if the baby is not aborted. That's how.

After Edit - The difference between an abortion and killing a month old baby is huge. First of all in the early stages of pregnacy there is no human being. There is simply a multitude of dividing cells. A month old baby has completed it's development, it thinks, it feels, it's not just cells. Doing an abortion in the early stages of pregancy is not killing. By that logic you should not scratch your skin as you are killing life (cells).

legraham2001 you sound really selfish , you couldn't be a good mother anyway. As for the pro choice people.....what about the baby's choice.

I love some of the logic and I use that term loosely. What some of you
are in effect saying is, I would not shoot anyone but if someone wants
to I will not interfere.

It's a poor example. It makes no sense because it's impossible.

Because the choice I make for myself shouldn't be the choice for millions of other women. I wouldn't want anyone to decide for me what is in my best interest since they are not walking in my shows. With that said, I hope that I would not choose to abort, but I have never been in a situation where that was even a prospect. I might feel differently if the pregnancy was the result of rape or incest. I feel that a woman has a right to an abortion, but should discuss the option with the father and not use abortion as a form of birth control. I had my 1st child after I was married (my choice) and I chose to use birth control to avoid pregnancy to begin with.

I wonder if this would be as much of an issue in society at large if it was the male of the species that had to carry a child to term. Something to think about.

Pro-choice means you are okay with people doing something, regardless of what it is. It does not need to mean that they, in particular, would need to act or do the same. Being pro-choice means one is unbiased as to what a person decides, not necessarily them in particular.

Danielle
I think it makes perfect sense. I'm pro-choice and believe that women fully have the right to have an abortion, but I personally would never have an abortion. Just because I wouldn't have one, doesn't mean I'm against it. Someone else compared it to war, like they wouldn't fight in a war but they're not against it, but rather support those who fight in it. THink about it and you'll eventually understand.

beauteimparfait
because while some people do not think it is the right choice for them, they understand how it could benefit others. like young teens who get pregnant many of them just need a second chance or older women when having child could kill them

jan
I think those who hold this opinion are saying that they're capable of keeping their personal/moral feelings separate from the legal rights of others. There are plenty of issues I don't agree with on a personal level, but I have to respect the law and the constitution. Either that or break out my picket signs and head to D.C.

Mommato2
Your argument doesn't make any sense either. Just because I wouldn't have an abortion myself doesn't mean that I think I have the right to decide what someone else can or can't do.

I personally don't stand up in the middle of the town square and preach my views to everyone who will listen, but I advocate the right of my neighbor to do so.

wdx2bb
If others think that a human life does not being at conception, and that our Supreme Court has ruled on the right to privacy concerning a woman's rights over her own body, then it's certainly rational to support a pro-choice policy to make sure those people maintain those rights.

You can disagree, and that's fine. It's a difficult area to come up with common ground. But even many hard-core anti-choice advocates agree with exceptions such as rape and incest. So is there an absolute line?

Dr. Rjinswand
Good question, actually - very well put.

I think the main reason for people to be pro-choice is that we genuinely don't believe there is a "victim". As far as we can tell, all logic, reasoning and facts tell us that a three month old fetus isn't a living being - due to the complete lack of any brain or nervous system.

A slave IS a living person.

But still, I must applaud you for making the most intelligent pro-life argument I've ever heard.

legraham2001
to me its all about MY body....Its mine, no one elses. I don't think anyone else should be able to tell me what i can do with my body. But what you do with your body is your choice.

tilksmom
It means each person has a right to make a decision based on there individual life and life experience without standing in judgment of another who might make a different choice.

Kourtney M
When someone says they wouldn't do something them self, but feel that others have the right to decide. I personally am against abortion and that is one of the few reasons I'm not voting for Oboma or how ever you spell his name.

Jodie !
It means that they wouldn't do it themselves
but theyre not against other people doing it

like kids on drugs
There are the kids who do drugs
and the straight edge kids who are friends with them

pro choice means you're giving people the right to choose. being pro or anti abortion is a completely different topic.

Baby Girl due soon!!!
kind of confusing question but i am against abortion.

Bad analogy.

First, unlike slavery, this does not involve a person's right to control another person and their life.

Second, this involves a woman's choice to either choose to have an abortion or forego one. That is a personal choice.

Third, insofar as those who claim that life begins at conception, I disagree.

But as far as making it legal or illegal, the only thing I do not support is late-term abortions. If you've waited that long, then you obviously had doubts. Unless of course, its an emergency and the mother's life is in danger.

Otherwise, even then, all of the above, are moral beliefs. I do not believe the government should be getting involved in peoples' private choices or their private lives and since they don't have a video camera hidden in your bedroom, putting one there would not make any sense, would it?

But the slavery thing? Not a good comparison by a long shot.

doc_holliday1863
you are the same as what your advocateing

soccerchickx3
how is that not reasonable?
its like saying that you personally wouldnt have an abortion, but it is the choice of every person as to whether they would or not.

John Smith
most people in Massachusetts support gay marriage, are they gay? a lot of people support the war in Iraq, are they in the army?

Ryan
The distinction you're missing is between committing the act and allowing others to do so. I wouldn't want my daughter to have an abortion, but it's her choice. Same with drinking, drugs, and .50 other harmful acts.

It's rather libertarian.

Why not? I don't want to marry a woman but I don't think gay marriage should be illegal.

There is a difference between sin and crime.
Just because one person chooses not to do something based on their beliefs, doesn't mean that they will judge other people and force them to think the same way as them.
