How long does something need to be in my possession before I legally own it?

A laptop an ex left at my house, for example?

Legally it will never be yours. If your ex asks for it back then you will have to return it otherwise it is stealing. Unless she says that you can keep it and you get it in writing.

If you have contacted him regarding his property and he has not come to get it or otherwise arrange for it to be picked up, I would say 30-60 days max....unless he is in jail or something.

you have to have reasonably tried to give it back before it is yours.

They have sixty days after you have informed them, then it's yours legally. Be prepared to prove you informed her (copy). Letter is best. Your ex. cannot use your residence as a storage bin. If she tries you can charge her for storing her belongings.

You have to send certified documents giving said person a set time frame to pick it up before it's considered abandoned.

The amount of time will very by state and the specific type of situation, there's no set answer.
