well, thinking about racism isn't bad, really. what i mean by that is, no one can punish you for what you think. but if you go into a public place and announce racial remarks, you will be punished. severely, i might add. |

yes... racism does no good to everyone.. in a society that shows itself to the world as a non-racist society then it is a ig crime and a reflection of what our society really stands for.. |
|

no because its your believes and nobody can tell you who to like and who not to like! |

absolutely not. although why would race be a problem for someone. personality I can understand |
|

:D
|
no i dont think racism should be a crime even though racism isnt as bad as it was before it still exists. racism is inevitable. |

You cannot be punished for your thoughts, you have a right to free thinking. If you act on those thoughts then you can be punished. |

absolutely not. if that were to happen, a new revolution would occur, i think. i know I would revolt. if that was ineffective, i'd probably bolt to canada. |

There are many forms of racism in which some are a crime. |

Of course not, your thoughts are left alone, at least the laws in the U.S.A say that your rights stand until you reach another person, it's your opinion, being racist, now if you show racism everywhere you go, you interefere with that person's rights, that should be punished. Did you understand anything above? |

You can think what you like, but we already have laws on the books that cover this. |

racism in action should be a crime |

If it was, Obama would have been arrested a long time ago. |

Racism is already a crime, in the moral/ethical sense. So are you talking about monitoring thoughts? I'm pretty sure no one is around to check those, outside of God. I think God lets us (free choice again) think what we want to, and then each of us have to accept the consequences. |
|

puma

No. Although racism is terrible and people should learn to accept each other, if racism was a crime, what would there be to stop the law enforcement from making disagreeing with the government a crime? Pretty soon, that kind of stuff could lead to socialism. We have a right to free speech and thought. |

While I agree with hate crimes being punishable by law, I don't agree that thoughts of racism should be punished. That's like saying ignorant people should be punished for not knowing what others do, or that children should be shunned for not knowing as much as adults.
Well guess what: everyone is ignorant about something or another.
Racism is a form of ignorance, a learned one; it's also something that modern society doesn't tolerate. But it takes a patient person to educate and enlighten people from racist thoughts without berating or marginalizing them.
We have the right to think however we think and not be punished for our thoughts. |

Racism itself shouldn't be a crime but it certainly is despicable. |

Racism is bitter reality, one can not take it off from minds, books, society. It is in human blood.
Should one be punished for thoughts, it all depends if it is against "MIGHT IS RIGHT". Then yes.
Otherwise it is "FREEDOM OF SPEECH" |

Well if you're black, asian, or hispanic it should be. haha:) White Power!!! |

no. freedom of speech is vital in society. racism is wrong, but you can't stop people thinking what they think and believing what they believe, that's called brainwashing, which can be just as bad. it could also never be moderated as a crime, there would be no force to command it to stop, without dipping into even worse things such as genocide and mass-lobotomies to keep it controlled. it is morally wrong, yes, but cannot be controlled by the police or anyone else. the most that one can do is frown upon it and embrace anti-racism. |
|

Archer
|
No. Racism is wrong but this is the land of the free and people are allowed to think whatever. But it is illeagal to act on your thoughts of racism. |

It is remarkable to see how many people on here are in favor of criminalizing thought.
The sort of bad things that spring from racist, collectivist thought are already crimes, such as assault, murder, and expulsion from public places.
Making it a crime to think something is not only illogical, but almost impossible to prosecute justly. This is the difficulty with declaring certain offenses "hate crimes." How do you ascertain the intent of the perpetrator. I believe South Park did a particularly funny and biting episode on this topic. |

Should the pope be punished for being Catholic? Well, maybe. Lol. But seriously, no. No person should be punished for something that conceive, whether it is conceived by others differently or not. |

You should not be punished for your thoughts.
But racism should not be encouraged, we are all of the HUMAN RACE!
We are not a COLOR or LANGUAGE! |

In what country? Racism is a fact of life. It always has been, and always will be. It's prevalent in both black and white, and any other race you might want to throw in there. It's become worse over the last decade or so because of the "political correctness" crowd. It's as though we have become the United States of the offended. |

I may not agree with what you have to say, but I will die for your right to say it!!!!!!
by the way what do you call affirmative action? Oh I forgot thats "good racism" yeah |
|

Pinky

If that were the case every single person would be in jail.
Your thoughts are just that; yours...untill you ACT on your thoughts...then it can be a crime. |

If that was so then Obama and Rev. Wright would in a heap of trouble! |
