Wednesday 13 :)

they should be but the government make so much tax of them they wont ban them. Also i feel for smokers they are always getting told to quit but they pay tax when the it comes to the government having to pay for the health they kick over it, these people give them money i think that's rude. People should be able to smoke but there should be smoking and non smoking restaurants (the people who work their smoke), pup and things least that why everyone is happy apart from the government because they have to spend money.
:) |

awww yeah- that's right!
 |
i personally think it all should be legalized. i myself do not do drugs, but drinking kills just as many braincells as smoking marijuana.
i don't think smoking cigarettes should be illegal. they do not kill brain cells- at least like drinking and doing other drugs.
if it's because "they are bad for you" then they should take candy bars off the shelves. they should take high fat meats off the shelves. they should take white bread off the shelves.
technically EVERYTHING is bad for you. making it all illegal won't keep people from doing it. it will just make more crime b/c people will still want to do it, and then just do it illegally. |

From a moral point of view - yes.
HOWEVER
Gordon Brown needs every penny from the very high taxes so it will never happen! |

No you may as well say ban alcohol as that is far more dangerous, domestic violence, drunk driving etc. etc |

I wish smoking would have never started it gives kids lung cancer and 2nd hand smoke just if they breath in the smoke. The people who do smoke get bad breath and just smell bad all together, they get yellow teeth and eventually brain and/or lung cancer.
The only reason i say that it shouldn't be stopped (since it already started) is because it's hard for the brain to stop craving it, it's hard to function without one after a while (i don't know why), and it calms people down, and i just don't want a whole bunch of people craving something they can't have that r angry and aren't very coordinated at that time. (can u imagine) |

Because it is a multi-billion $$$ industry...that is why it is still legal. |

Nonsense, there are thousands upon thousands of people who have lived, smoked and died without ever having a sick day due to cigarettes just as there are thousands who get and die from cancer and other lung disease's every year who have never smoked.
You are foolish if you think cigarettes are in the same class as heroin, meth, cocaine and other street drugs. If you want the vast majority of people to get on your band wagon keep the over the top hysteria out of your reasoning.
As to the reason they are still for sale, it is because smoking has been around for hundreds of years. Thousands of people love to smoke, thousands more in this country alone make their living growing tobacco and tobacco itself is not the issue.
The real issue is what ever the companies that make the cigarettes are putting in to make them addictive. Get rid of that nonsense by them and the level of danger from cigarettes goes back to a manageable level and if people want to quit all they have to do is quit, no messy chemicals to worry about.
BTW, I do not now nor have I ever smoked. It seriously annoys me to have to smell the smoke and I think it's a dirty habit. All that being said, it is not my place to tell other people how to live their life or what they can and cannot do. In general other than occasionally being annoying smoking is not an issue in my life.
As a people we have got to stop trying to rule everything every one does and since you evidently don't know this, prohibition does NOT work. It was tried with alcohol and failed, it will fail with smoking. |

Ban second hand car exhaust.
Your car exhaust is killing me, please stop driving.
Why is gas still legal? |

Because the government profits from the sale of cigarettes. |

Yes of course, and booze. Horse racing, bingo, football pools, raffles, all types of gambling.
Men wearing white socks is abhorrent, they should have their feet cut off.
Religion? we had better pass on that one, it's not politically correct to discuss that!
Ah sweets, they rot the teeth, make us fat, they should go.
TV and movies, they lead us astray.
Not much left is there?
I could just go for a walk in the country , ooops I cant just walk anywhere can I? |

Of course not. Smoking is a personal choice. I do agree that smoking should be banned in areas though like restaurants and shopping centers.
A lot of different cultures (historically) used smoking as a social activity. Even animals are known to get plants to make them feel a certain way.
Having said that, I do believe that if, in Britain, they knew the adverse effects of smoking, it would have been outlawed when tobacco was imported. Its not because it has been around for so long and was extremely poplar decades ago. |

This question has been on here SO MANY times and the answer is still the same: the Government cannot afford to lose the vast amount of revenue they make in taxes on tobacco products. |

will you lot shut up about smoking already. |

No. History shows that if you make things like alcohol and drugs illegal it engenders the rise of new lucrative and criminal industries to service the need.
Much better and more rational to control the price, regulate and legally tax such products and services.
Smoking may kill but it is the individual's choice. Anyone in the Western world who is not aware of the risks is deaf, dumb and blind. |

Cigarettes should be legal as should a number of other things that are currently deemed illegal. Using the excuse that "something" is harmful is extremely open-ended. If you look at cigarettes, drugs, alcohol, automobiles, carnivals, skateboards.....they all kill people and could be considered hazardous to your health. The idea is to live responsibly. I choose not to smoke cigarettes, do drugs, and I have about 6 beers a year, but if someone wants to ruin their life for the aforementioned I say let them. It makes life easier for those who want to live a full, productive, and wealthy life. |

No, but the rest of us shouldnt pay when these people end up in the hospital with emphysima or cancer |

No, infact if we e ver expect to see the billions that are supposed to be paid by big tobacco we need to start getting more people to smoke. Can't collect taxes if they don't sell their product. |

smoking doesn't kill just as bad as drugs at all its FAR worse than drugs. No i don't think smoking should be illegal i think all drugs should be legalised, it's the only way to bring it above ground and de-glamorise them. |

because it's our right to choose, alcohol can kill you too after drinking for years but they're not going to make that illegal. as adults we are able to make our own choices. we don't need the government holding our hands saying "this is bad, lets make it illegal"
if i want to smoke myself to death, that's really my business. yeah, that may sound harsh but i'm a smoker and i know the risks so if i die, it's my own damn fault. |

no dont be frigin stupid!
Cigeretes like drugs are there by choice they dont inflict themselves upon people, they only kill SOME people.
its a personal choice wether people smoke . it shouldnt be dictated. |

no I do not agree I do not like cigarettes but I know people who do and it is a choice you would not say ban food to a fat person |
