What are your views on lowering the legal drinking age to 18?
Find answers to your legal question.

What are your views on lowering the legal drinking age to 18?

In Ontario (Canada), the legal drinking age is 18. I am writing a report and possibly doing a speech and I think this is good topic. Here are my three main points.
> If you're allowed to get married, have children, buy a gun for your personal uses, join the military to fight for your country, buy and sell property, pay taxes, purchase/sell cars and get a proper job at the age of 18, then why aren't you allowed to purchase/consume alcohol?
> If you're a citizen of Ontario and you travel to other places such as Manitoba, Barbados, Italy etc. and you're allowed to drink at the age of 18, then why not in Ontario?
> If most of society views you as responsible and mature adult at the age of 18, then isn't it only fair that you're allowed to drink?

What do you think about this?

I realize that you're allowed to drive at the age of 18 and I am saying that they should lower the legal drinking age to 18. But, 18-year-old's are STILL responsible and mature people. As long as alcohol is legal, there are going to be accidents related to alcohol consumation. I am certain that it isn't only young people that are getting into these types of accidents, there are plenty of people who are well into their 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s etc. that are causing these accidents, too.

I am against lowering the drinking age for imbibing alcoholic beverages due to the lack of maturity of 18 year old people.

i seriously dnt think that they should even think about lowering the drinking age to 18 bc i think that there are already too many ppl dyin from drinking and driving and i think that we would be saving alot of lives if we didnt EVER lower it..lol

ya okay Americans are dumb. Parents don't raise their kids for one thing. and it doesn't matter any way 18 year olds can get it when ever they want like most street drugs

Ya well you live in a society where we are Americans. We are considered higher class than the pther countries out there. And I think the drinking age in Canada is actually 19.

Ya you do have a good point of the things that you are able to do here at the age of 18. But, People that are not at least 21 do not have the right responsabilities and mind sets when they drink. A thing that you might want to consider is maybe researching when the brain fully developes...?? I know that the younger you are, the rougher it is on your body. Also if they changed it to 18 here in the US do you think that as many people would succeed in the beginning of their college or end of their high school years? That time in our lives are important to us and can make the biggest impact. Most 18 year olds don't know that.

Not smart at all. You know how many people die in drunk accidents. You will only increase deaths by doing so. Why do you want to see more people die?

In my ideal world, I would totally do away with alcohol because it's nothing but trouble. But realistically, i would increase the drinking age to 26. When kids are out of college and stuff

Confused
Ok this is what i think...(keep in mind that i am only 14 and a freshman in High School) so i think its wrong because at 18 u're still sort of learning how to drive if ypu think about it. Anyway I Hope i helped you.

It seems like it would make since considering your first point, but there are just too many people that get killed in car accidents due to immature teenagers drinking and driving.

I think that the drinking age should stay at 21 and not lowered. I have seen way to many underage kids drinking that are not MATURE enough to handle alcohol, who can suffered the consequences. I feel that there would be an increase in teenagers dyeing from alcohol poisoning and more car accidents that are alcohol related. I myself was a big drinker/partier at 19. Im now 22. They don't know how to handle the consequences that come with drinking. Their bodies are always fully developed. They are NOT MATURE enough.
Ontario may be different then the US but I think that for the most part my opinions are valid on this. I think that your reasons for why the drinking age should be lowered are weak.
-Yes, you are allowed to legally get married, but honestly how many people actually do get married that young. And IF you hear about it happening how many relationships actually last now-a-days. Just because someone is legally able to get married doesn't mean that they should be legally allowed to purchase alcohol.
People can pay taxes at 16 if the have a job, should 16 teen year old be allowed to drink too?
You can have children at any age. 13 now-a-days. Just because they have children doesn't mean that they should be able to drink?
Alcohol is a drug. (really look it up) It is a depressant. I not not a not good at all when not used in moderation. Kids cannot make that distinction.

Savvy Sauce
Think about it.... do you reasonably consider most 18 year olds you know "mature"? I know I'm stereotyping when I say this, but the majority of 18 year olds aren't.

♦•*¢яι¢кєт*•♦
I don't know which side to be on really... I'm 17 and I believe i'll be responsible enough when i'm 18 to drink responsibly and not drink drive. But I know, my body might not be mature enough to handle as well, and there is plenty of people who aren't resonsible and take advantage of it. There's not realy a happy medium. And anyway. these days laws don't matter there's always those people out there who buy the alcohol for under 18's and ignore the whole law altogther! you can't win.

don;t you think that there are enough car accidents, wild parties and already underage drinking as there is?

amercian laws are really stupid, the should make sense.

no!

there are already stupid ppl driving on the freeway.

if the drinking age gets lowered...it will be chaos

Sniff My Buns
I'm 17. I've had very bad experiences with alcohol (I almost died on a hospital bed from alcohol poisoning). SO my personal opinion would be no, but who am I to control other people's lives?

It's a personal choice, and, whatever the age, people seem to do what they want anyways

I like to think of it as more of a lesson, one in which we all must learn...

You remember when you were in highschool and all your friends went to a party and you asked your mom and she said no? then you said "but all my friends are going to be there". she says "you are my daughter, i care about you, not them". This is kind of the same thing. This is like when you mention Italy, Manitoba, Barbados... Your country cares about it's own people and it's own laws. If another country has different rules and regulations towards the drinking age it's their problem. Since you live in Canada you follow what they want and how they want it.

In US it's also 21, but i heard that this will be debated to lowering the age limit of drinking to 18.

Also, getting married, having children, buying selling property, taxes, pushase/sell cars, proper job should not have been added to your list because it CANT KILL YOU. unlike drinking CAN. If you drink and drive or drink and get in a fight and kill someone which is possible or overdose on drinking and die from it which is also possible or land in jail.

But i agree with you, in my country drinking age should also be lowered because it's not like a 21 year old drinking can make more rational decisions drunk than an 18 year old. When you're drunk your brain doesn't say "since i'm 21 i can be aware of my surroundings even when i'm drunk than if i was 18".

I agree with you, drinking age should be lowered because if it isn't teens are still going to drink. NOBODY follows the drinking age law. Teens are ALWAYS going to find ways to get drunk.

Then if they do lower the drinking age and you do kill someone while driving then you get a less severe penalty of 2nd degree murder if it's legal as opposed to something that illegal like underage drinking and killing someone and driving then you get a more severe penalty.

I think it should be. But, for instance, in America, drinking isn't as widely drank by children. People here drink to get drunk. In Europe it's commonplace to have a glass of wine with dinner, but here it would be appalling for the same thing to happen. It's a difference in culture. Alcohol isn't viewed here the same. It's seen as something that when improperly, can kill people.
It's the same thing with guns. If introduced at the right age, kids will known not to get it down from the closet. If the youth knew and understood how drinking can harm, in other ways than just 'Don't Drink and Drive' posters and billboards, it would be fine. They would know the effects and make sure that they respected themselves and other people while drinking. It wouldn't be 'drinking to get drunk' anymore.

Not a bad argument. But seriously, having been drinking since I was 14, I would say 18 is too young and maybe even 21 is too young. Don't get me wrong, I would still have been drinking but looking back at my experiences and adventures, 18 was too young. Did too many dumb things. wow....how'd I make it to 40?

it shouldn't be done. Here in Britain where its 18 and we have a massive problem with under age drinking and yobbish behaviour. Although I do contribute to it I guess.

I sort of agree. When and if they do I hope they make the drinking limit between 18 and 21 lower than the ones above 21. and I might as well add that we should make cigarettes and chewing tobacco illegal and then make marijuana legal, but have a "highness level" similar to the drinking level. but for a solid answer, I agree with lowering the drinking age.

The drinking age law is another way for government to steal money from people for doing the same things they did.

monroe
I think if the law was changed there'd actually be a lot less of drunk driving. Kids drink because they like doing things they arent supposed to. Thats just my opinion. Almost everywhere in the world you can drink at 18, except here.

good question. iam in the usa . years ago the drinking age was 18 in montana. now in north dakota it used to be and still is 21 and now for that matter its 21 in montana as well. but sure your right . if a kid can buy cigs. and vote and fight for our country . oh yea get married. they should bealble to drink in a bar. and as you know the ones that can not handle the booze . it wouldnt matter if they were 21 and started to drink in a bar. it wouldnt work. so why not. house partys are not the thing and if the kid has had too much to drink. then the bar tender should say sorry dude no more for you. so yes.let the young adults drink. and grow them up. but if they are buying for their buddys. then slam the book at them.

katrina
Im not from Canada I am from Michigan but i totally get what your saying, they should make the legal drinking age 18 people nowadays are growing up alot faster then people did in the 60s.

dwise
if you can marry at age 18 ... drive... vote... fight for your country.... why the hell not let you drink??? my opinopn of corse

LovesAva
Im in Alberta and it is 18. They were considering raising it to 21 for quite along time. Alot of talk, but nothing past that. They think rasing the age limit is going to stop alot of violence. They are under the impression that its all the 18+19 year olds who cause all the trouble.
The thing is, even in provincs where the drinking age is higher there is still violence, there are still drunken bar fights. Think about it, a bunch of drunk 21 year olds have just as much probabilty of violence then a bunch of 18 years in the bar for the first time.
I say, if they are going to drink (which you know they will) they mineswell do it somewhere. No huge house parties, no drunk teenagers walking around town, and an easy place to get a cab.

But I agree with you completly with your first point. Im an adult, Im married, I should be able to drink if I so please. I dont see why Im mature enough to handle everything but alochol.

You should really protest the right not to be treated as an adult under law until 21 if thats what the drinking age is. Only makes sense! I bet you could get alot of people to agree with that.

i disagree. more drunk driving. bad

I believe if you are in the military than ok. However you have a good point. I think we need to raise the age on all those things to 23.
