What do you think of the ban on cigarette displays? Is it an effective way to curb smoking?

Ontario and Quebec are the latest provinces to join the list of Canadian jurisdictions to ban cigarette displays in a bid to stop young people from lighting up.

No, i really dont think it will do much good... smokers are smokers and they are until they quit. not showing tobacco wont make them crave less... seeing people on the streets smoking IS the biggest crave factor!

No I don't think that hiding the power walls will curb smoking by anyone, the more you try to hide or repress something the more people want it. And of course the businesses that sell cigarettes are stuck with the bill for all these wonder ideas. Our government is going to put people out of business with all these laws they come up with that the business owners have to pay for. How about some compensation for them for having to pay for this crap.

Anyone I know buys their smokes off the reserves for about $10 a carton. I find it hypocritical to collect tax off a product while preaching for people to stop using it. As for the health costs smokers pay taxes too and contribute as much as nonsmokers to the tax base or even more with the taxes paid on the cigarettes they buy.

leslie w
Definitely not an effective way to curb smoking. Peer pressure in the young will make them find the smokes. The older generation who smoke will also continue despite the ban on displays. The only way to completely stop smoking, which costs the health care system hugely, is to stop making the dam cigarettes. But hey, it is the almighty dollar that means more them a healthy body, right??????

bj
Absolutely not. I know what I smoke and I just ask for it.

The government should put their efforts in providing other support that using these draconian methods. After all the last time I checked Canada was still a free country. It seems this level of dictatorship is just another method of them infiltrating our lives and forcing their mandates on us. Why don;t they use the taxes to help individuals quit the habit appropriately.

All it is is annoying. I'm from Quebec and I know that every corner store sells cigarettes, it makes no difference to me if they are behind a wall or under the counter. I know they are there and so does everyone else.

If the government really cares about this, they should ban them altogether and stop pretending that they care because they make way too much money off cig. taxes to really care. These tactics are to shut up the people who want to ban smoking and nothing else.

Dave Q
Cigarettes are not a product that users buy because they see them on display. Smokers are addicted and go to the store to buy cigarettes. They don't go to the store for a candy bar and buy cigarettes because of a pretty display case.

In the same manner we could get alcoholics to quit drinking by not allowing bars; beer stores and liquor stores to display alcohol. Could we not even get heroin addicts to quit heroin by not allowing it to be shown in display cases?

It's a silly law for political gain as there are more adamant non-smokers than retail store owners.

This ban is crazy. It's just one more way for the government to micro manage canadians so we will not be able to think for ourselves. We have a growing obesity problem in Canada that has a huge impact on children, if you think this will work for smoking why don't you close down the fast food industry, ban ads etc. Place junk food behind lock and key.. ie) all processed foods, potatoe chips, candy bars, soda pop etc. Maybe we could stop the burden of health issues on society. NOT!!! People will get what they want regardless. The government should really focus of more important issues.

I think it is foolish I smoked for 35 years and quit because I wanted to this is just picking on the little guy it won't stop people from buying it and I think it has gotten out of control when cigarettes are banned worst than drugs.

I quit smoking in Dec 07' (6 months ago) I can honestly tell you that health warnings on packages and removing ads from stores, or hiding cigarettes in stores doesn't work in the least. everyone knows smoking is bad for them, and everyone knows where to buy the cigarettes... at the store from behind the big white sliding screen. If cigarettes are so bad for us (and they are I have never felt so good as the last 6 months smoke free) then why is it legal to sell them? Could it be the amount of taxes the govt. collects on them that keeps them in the stores? At any rate if the govt. really wants people to quit smoking, they should just stop selling the dang things to people and then telling them how bad they are for them.

Another useless law. This one causes complications to vendors. The display has nothing to do with someone's addiction to smoking. It sure won't stop anyone from buying their cigarettes. There are more important priorities for our government. Seriously...

no it will not curb smoking.i was at a cornor store last night and a woman with her child about 10 asked her why did they have all that white behind the counter.the mother told her it was to hide the cigarrettes.the little girl then said.why do they have cases of beer when we walk into the store.my daddy died from beer but not smoking.true story.gee makes u wonder if we should just say the hell with smokes and have a drink.in all my years as a smoker i have never heard of some one smoking 4 or five cigarettes in an evening and getting into ther car and killing some one.but thats just my opinion.WHATS URS

Personally, I think this is a ridiculous cost to the store in an effort that will have no true results, other than angering other shoppers by slowing down line ups.

Marijuana, Ecstasy, crack, not sold in stores, but most users know where to find it. Also, there is a law in place making an underage person (or someone resembling underage) show ID proving that they are an ADULT, and can make their own decision.

What next? Putting Twinkies and chocolate bars in lock-up?

What about booze? How many men go home and beat their wives and children up because they've had too many cigarettes? Or gotten behind the wheel of a car after smoking a few cigarettes?

Yes, smoking is bad, we all know that...but there are many other things that cause a burden to our health system, obesity and alcohol being two of the main causes. Why is it just the smokers that are being slammed by our government?

Example...the government banned smoking in bingo halls in Ontario...but now Bingo Halls can be licensed to sell alcohol. What's this? trading one bad vice for another? Enough already.

Not at all. I live in Saskatchewan and they have been doing that for awhile now and it does not stop or detere anyone from wanting a cigarette. I quit in December. You stand in line behind someone buying them and guess what you see they have to open the curtain/cabinet for them. All it is is a big inconvenience for the store owner and clerks. Half the time they are left open or the curtain taped open tied whatever. You should offer the patch or other means freely (or by prescription) to those that want to quit that to me would be far more beneficial that costing the store owner extra which he will get back from his patrons.

inka_111
how about people decide not the government? you ban it only to draw more people to it (reverse pychology!). Has it stopped ever? it's up to people to decide whether smoking is good or not. It is not 19th century anymore to ban the ideas and etc. People only need to be educated. This is a very harsh decision to me.

miriamglitch
The idea that kids start smoking because they see a package of cigarettes is ridiculous! Retailers aren't even allowed to have the display visible for more than a few minutes. I doubt that seeing a display of cigarette packages for 3 minutes is going to make ANYONE start smoking.....although now that they've made them mysterious and forbidden I'm sure getting them will become a nice challenge for a few kids.

g w
Not effective. I agreed when they pulled advertising, it targeted everyone. But hiding them? Is that a matter of "it's not there if you can't see it"?
For some young people it may make them more curious.
People will quit when they are good and ready, not because their habit is behind a door.
(from a non-smoker)

for me obesity is offensive and disgusting so to make things fair lets throw giant tarps over Burger King and McDonalds in an attempt to stop those that are overweight from going there.

Vicki k
If a person is going to smoke they are going to smoke regardless if they are hidden or not. I personally am not a smoker I remember going to the store for my nan to buy her one single cigarette and I was about 10 years old! I think the government is going overboard & wasting so much money on so many issues this is just one more example of someone having too much power and not putting it to better use LIKE
Child abuse, child hunger, Wife/husband abuse, stop the littering of our beautiful country cannot believe how many people litter our country side is not your garbage bin, take it home and dispose of it correctly, gas prices, pool closings, our gun laws, I could go on but think I may step on someone's ethical toes proud to say I am born a Canadian.

hypocracry is this Russia?l
such hypocracy - taxes r still being collected right? booze, cocaine, gambling they don't kill or destroy individuals and whole families right? but the taxes collected are big numbers. prohibition only brought criminals on the scene back in the days - has nothing been learned from the past? and yet only smokers of cigarettes are looked upon as "criminals"!
is this still a free country? are we not all the nations of the world the result of governments' miss managements? let's talk about that shall we... the abused state of our planet ...did they not see things coming? i can't believe that it's like the other day on a canadian news network the minister of some department informed us of the imbalance occurring because of the baby boomers - hello did u just figure that out NOW ? IDIOT ! they have taken our right to bare arms so i guess it would simpler for them to overtake us all together right? so do we allow them to take our rights away from us one by one? i don't believe in violence but when we are attacked on our streets in our homes what are we to do - just let them - how are we defend ourselves? if you have any comments i would be interested to read them.

I don't think it will do anything to stop people from smoking.
I still know where I can buy them, as does any teenager.

So really does it help? Not really.

When they banned all indoor smoking, people simply went outside and smoked. We got used to it. People adapt and we’ll adapt to having smokes behind a cabinet when we go to the store.

I heard an ad on the radio for this new law, saying, "Out of site, out of mind"

I've never heard anything so ridiculous or insulting. Smoking is not something you do because you happen to see a pack so you want one. It's an addiction.

The more rights they take away from us, the more laws they enforce aren't helping, they just make you frustrated and angry. There is nothing worse than feeling like a second class citizen. They make more than enough money off of cigarettes, perhaps they could take that money and make more programs for quitting.

Health Canada calls smoking a habit, saying, "It takes 21 days to form a habit and 21 days to break one" Smoking isn't a habit. It's a serious addiction and the sooner they realise that instead of thinking smokers are stupid or lazy for not quitting, the better off everyone will be.

Now when I walk into a store and see the cigarettes hidden, the thing that our Government is making so much money off of, it just pisses me off, not entices me to quit.

**stepping off soapbox now**

as u may or may not know canada gets alot of revenue from smokes since its double the taxes compared to here..they dont care if u smoke..theyed prefer it for revenue....the more u try to hide something the more willing people will be to try to find it..thats human nature
im a smoker for 18 years now..if they dont have my smokes ill still drive 10 miles away to get them..hiding them and not advertising will just give it more appeal..if they wanted to totally get rid of smoking they would make it illegal..the problem lies in that its a huge revenue creater and as far as the health aspects and insurance stuff...if u are not sick...u dont need a doctor...
its an age old deal..for instance if u tell yer daughter to never go out with a black guy she will find 1 and bring him home to you just to rebel
same thing with smoking..they will find a way if they are at all available

Katie H
Having worked in retail places before I honestly don't think it will make a difference to non-smokers and if youth still want to smoke they will find a way to get it. I also think it's a hassle for the employees who now have to remember where the cigarettes are without being able to look at the rows to find them easier. The picture made it look like they were under lock and key behind drawers, or perhaps I misunderstood. But some of the brands look quite similiar to the others and it's not always easy to find them in a hurry when you have five people wanting different brands at the same time. I feel that making it illegal in restaurants and public places is a better idea.

For a long time, Alcohol was banned from commercials and even ads in magazines and that never stopped anybody from drinking. So to me it would seem to be just another law to appease whoever is writting this law's conscious. It's just another law, another policy another form of minuteism.

Axel M
I do not think the bans on cigarette displays deter anyone from smoking. Buying cigaretts is not an impulse purchase; you either want them or you do not.

As a smoker I disike standing in line then asking for my brand only to discover they are out. If I can see there are none in the display case I could just move on to the next shop.

R M
Nice to see politicains missing the boat again. Cigarettes should be banned from stores altogether and sold only in liquor stores and bars. The serious smokers will still get their smokes but all new smokers and casual ones would have their habits stopped or curbed. Chicken sh*t goverment.

I think it is a a waste of money for stores to have to purchase these covers. If people want to smoke they will and I think there is way too much hype about smoking. What ever happened to freedom of choice and freedom of rights. the gov't dictates where we can smoke, but has no problem taking the money they make off the cigarettes. If you took 20 people and put them in a garage where everyone smoked they would all walk out ok but if you took 20 people and put them in a garage and started a car no one would walk out so I think the gov't should be thinking about the effects of car pollution and the toxins that are come from cars more than they should be thinking of smoking. There are a lot more worries in this world then people seeing displays of smokes. What about all the soldiers over seas fighting for our country, and the natural disasters that have hit in the states and over seas and what about the people who are still suffering from the effects of Katrina I am sure they are not worrying about whether or not there children see a display of smokes they are wondering when they will be able to have a home so maybe the gov't should be thinking of these more important issues Thank you Jo
