What is the DIFFERENCE between MURDERING and KILLING?

Is there a difference between the two actions?

I was in the military and admit I have killed, Murder is killing for personal gain, actions you know is dangerous to others, or hatred for another person or race, and revenge.

Just off the top of my head without looking it up "murdering" has a strong connotation of deliberate and passionate/evil intention to do away with a living creature. "Killing" also denotes deprivation of life but sounds more mechanical, devoid of emotion. "Murdering" focuses on the horrible result to the victim and the enraged feelings of the person who did it. "Killing" is the physical act of life being taken and possibly could be inadvertent or less emotionally important to the one acting, or could connote that the person acting is emotionless or has hardened or abnormally blunted emotions. That's how I hear/see the words used most of the time, anyway. I do not know the derivations-- which would tell a lot about how the words came into the language but not necessarily about the way they are generally used today. Of course sometimes the words are used interchangeably.

mmm...sorta. murdering i guess is when you kill someone on person and killing, they usually that word when ijt was an accident or a mistake or something.

You can accidentally kill someone (hit them w/ your car for instance) -- you can't accidentally murder someone as it's a premeditated crime.

breezyleeme
murdering- intention of their death.
killing- it could be an accident.

Well murdering is killing something with a mean purpose. Like, you really don't need to kill this person. You are simply eliminating them for a personal, useless reason. And maybe there is a little bit of torture too.

Killing is like killing to eat. You have to kill animals to eat meat. Killing is based on survival. But, if you do it and you enjoy killing and torturing animals, then you are murdering them.

But if you are trying to defend yourself against someone who is trying to murder you, and accidentally stab them with the kitchen knife, then that's killing too.

If you enjoy killing, and seek pleasure out of it, it's murdering

thebabbster
Killing someone is when you cause the death of someone who is trying to harm you, murder is when you cause the death of a person who isn't doing anything to you.

Jbskk
I think that they are the same thing...

It's a strange question. I mean, when a farmer kills a cow for meat, you hardly ever hear of him murdering it, do you? He simply 'kills' it, because 'murder' seems a stronger term, perhaps one that is used when the murderer in question is unprovoked? However in answer to your question, I will have to agree with the majority of the pack and say that they mean the same thing.

I agree with Jesse's Girl, murdering is planned ahead of time, like you know how to kill them, and you want to kill them most likely. Killing can be accidental, not planned, etc.

They are the same but if you say you killed someone it is generally taken it may have been accidental but if you murdered some one it could be deliberate

Matt Mckerroll
murdering is an element of killing yet killing may/may not be an element of killing

(venn diagram: all x is y but only some y is x, x is murdering and y is killing)

killing encompasses, manslaughter, accidental and murder

murdering is a crime, killing can be like killing an animal

Jesse's Girl is right on this one.
Murdering someone is premeditated. You go out with the intentions of killing someone. You have a plan, a weapon, a reason (or no reason) and you carry through with it.

Killing someone could be accidental. It could range anywhere from an accidental fatal car accident, just a random accident in general. Or you could have accidently killed that squirrel crossing the road. (terrible example...its all i could think of)

Murder is the taking of the life of another human for "unjust" reasons. Murder is a type of killing. We allow some types of killing (in war, or as punishment), yet murder is not allowed because its motivation is deemed wrong.

They are basically the same but there is one small difference. Murder is when someone kills another person. (This is called Homicide) But Kill can be both Homiceide, and an accident. Hope I helped!

Yes, murder is premeditated and purposeful.

For example, if you held a grudge against someone and planned to end their life, that's murder because you planned and wanted to do it.

Killing can be accidental, like a car accident, or purposeful but not of your own will like during a war. The tricky situation is when you purposefully kill someone but didn't plan or want to do it. Then even some legal types have trouble defining it. But it doesn't matter because legally killing isn't a term; murder or manslaughter are used.

Love minus zero/no limit
I usually say something like " you killed the toilet!" which means it'll be 20 minutes till it's safe to go in the bathroom. Murder means you need to find a store bathroom across the street because it's horrible!

*.CraZie.*
Well.... I can kill a fly. I don't think they would classify that as MURDER. So I'd say there is a difference.

charlesjerrell
well there is a difference, you have a right to protect your self and your family from being murdered, most of the time it comes down to where its your life or the the other persons life in a life threating situation, if i break into ur house and kill u ,thats murder, if i try and kill u and you protect ur self and kill me it's not murder, same as a war, its you or them

Falcon_01
Murder is the pre-meditated act of ending a life without just cause.

Killing can be done in defense of self, loved ones, property, freedom, etc, or in war, or even in an accident without being considered murder because it is the reason or cause behind the death that is important.

B0uncingMoonman@aol.com
Murder is usually a premeditated act. You know you are gonna kill someone, even if you only decided at the last minute.
Or it`s done in a temper.

But killing is a general term, mostly used when you accidentally kill someone (except for soldiers whose job it is to kill. ie, they have permission).

Let us say someone was threatening to kill you, so you threatened them back with a knife (but you actually had no intention of actually killing them). Then they ran at you, and actually fell on the knife.

If it can be proved that this is what actually happened (say there was an eye-witness) then it could legitimately be described that you merely killed this person, not murdered him.

The Chair
Murder is with intent.

Mista Ricksta
You murder something with a soul when you intend to kill me/him/her/us/them!

Killing is what happens to things sans a soul!

For example, you never can murder a dog! Sure, you can KILL it. Yes, you CAN kill a cousin but if you intended to do it, THEN it becomes murder.

Murder is with intention and also can only be done to a human.

The legal determination is the difference. You might kill in self defense, that isn't murder.

Murder is something planned out or done in a fit of rage or emotion. Killing is something that is done for survival or by accident.

Abortion is murder because you have time to think about it, killing can happen instantly to protect your family or in the case of military necessary to protect the country.

You don't accidentally kill a living fetus while inside the mother's womb. You plan to do it, you are then a murderer.
If you got into a car wreck and the baby inside you was killed that's completely different.

Murder is the unlawful killing of another person.

Killing is very broad term, and can include accidental and legal killings (as in capital punishment).

The following is from a police officer who was forced to kill someone in the line of duty. Just a few days later, his father suddenly died from a heart attack. For some time, the officer felt God was punishing him for the shooting by taking his father. A pastor helped him understand the difference between killing and murder.)

"I killed that guy last week and this [my father's death] is my payback. I took a life; now somebody's taking somebody I care about." I remember thinking that over and over and over again, even when I got home. . . .

The next day, I got a call from the counselor who handles the officer-involved shootings. . . . I told her what I was thinking and that it was really bothering me. She asked me, "Are you religious?" I said, "Yeah, I'm very religious. I'm a Christian. I'm not a Bible-thumper, but I have my beliefs." She said, "Well, if you have your belief in God, you know we don't have a vengeful God. God wouldn't do that. It just happened."

Then a couple of days after that. . . . I told [a pastor] about the shooting, my dad's death, about all that had been going on in our lives recently. He quoted something out of the Bible about how God makes allocations for police officers, and then he said, "You need to understand that there are those people out there that have to protect the flock, and that's what you do." Then he said, "Do you understand the difference between killing and murder? The Bible says, 'Thou shall not kill,' but that's misinterpreted. What the Bible really means is 'Thou shall not murder.' Murder's premeditated. What you do as a police officer to survive and protect everybody else is not murder. Yes, you killed somebody, but it wasn't murder. There's a big difference in God's eyes."

As soon as he said that, . . . it was like it was gone. That was probably five days after my dad passed away, and as soon as that pastor deciphered the difference between killing and murder and pointed out that there were allocations in the Bible for people like soldiers and police officers and that there are people that have to do ugly things so the rest of us can lead normal lives, every stress from that shooting was gone. It was just an incredible rush of relief, especially with the religious words, because I believe in God; I believe in certain things and I believe you shouldn't kill. Then, when I heard the difference between killing and murdering and the interpretation of the Bible, that was really a big relief to me.
