How much notice do I give before quitting???
Find answers to your legal question.

How much notice do I give before quitting???

I have worked at this job for 11 years but I am not sure how much notice to give my employer. My boss and I are on good terms and she understands that I am ready to leave because I am burned out.

You should ask your boss. Most jobs require atleast 2 weeks notice, some however, require 6 months. It depends on your job and how easy or difficult it would be to replace you. When you got hired that should have been talked about.

If you don't want to ask your boss, then I would say give 1-2 months notice, that is usually good enough.

2 weeks.... some places, when they hire you they state in the employment offer letter how much time u have to give.

Two weeks is the standard time frame.

I know what you mean! Standard is 2 weeks, if you've been at the company for a long time and feel like it's going to be hard for them to replace you I would give it 3 weeks. Anything longer and you're going to start resenting the extra notice!

give her two weeks, so it doesnt look bad for other places if u want another job. good luck

2 weeks should be sufficient. check your handbook.

Merilee L
I always heard that two weeks was appropriate.

jamsterette@sbcglobal.net
If you already have another position then 2 weeks is sufficient so that you can start your new job. Think of the place you are going, they usually need you right away, so don't blow that one to try to be friends with your present employer.

Since you are on such good terms, and she understands you are ready to leave and why, I would tell your future employer 1 month notice. Then I would give 3 weeks notice, but let your current employer know you could work an extra week if necessary to assist the new person.

It really is up to you, but anything less than 2 weeks is very detrimental to a company. 4 weeks gives the company 2 weeks to hire, and then an additional 2 weeks for you to assist the newbie.

If you are really good terms talk to your supervisor. Talk to her and see what she would prefer. She may want you to help out with interviewing and training of your replacement. If you are on good terms try to do whatever they would like you to do (if possible). That will make them not only strong references but also could give you a good contact for networking.

However if you feel that is too long, a 2 week is usually standard unless there is a contract stating longer.

The minimum is 2 weeks, but it really depends on your position. If you're a teacher, a semester is appropriate; if you have a very specialized position for which someone would need your individual training, it may be appropriate for you to give as much time as need to find a replacement and train her.

Two weeks minimum. Don't feel bad about the company trying to find a replacement for you in that amount of time, that is their job not yours.

The standard is 2 weeks, if you want to continue good relations i would reccomend 4.

thealphafemme
There are some employers who have a policy against not giving at least a 2 weeks notice and will consider you "ineligible for re-hire" if you don't give the appropriate notice.

After 11 years, you'd hate to put such a black mark on your head, so do as a couple of others have said and check your handbook (assuming you have one! =)

If you give 2 weeks or more just to be courteous, you probably have nothing to worry about.
