i recently went for a job and before i could even fill out the application i was in orientation. when i asked was i being hired they said after they check my background. but i didnt sign any papers saying they could do so. technically can they do that?

Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, they must obtain your consent to check your background for employment decision related purposes. While this is all good and well on paper, a lot of employers break this law, and it's difficult to prove that they didn't hire you based on something they found in an unauthorized background check. |

Look on the internet. Any person can run a complete background check on any other person, without their knowledge or consent. Just about anytime I do a "people search" on Yahoo, I get a link that takes me to a website where I can order a complete background check using my credit card.
So, the simple answer is...yes they can. |
