how much notice to i need to give to my employer, i have been working there for under a year and am part time?

The Legal MINIMUM is 4 WEEKS once you have completed your probation period. And it MUST be in writing.

You mean notice to resign from your position? I say that two weeks is always good. You don't want to just quit without giving the company ample time to find a replacement. You don't want to burn any bridges, you might need this particular employer for a reference someday.

Usually its only a weeks notice, but its nice to give them a couple of weeks advance.

When you start working for a longer period, for every year you're employed there you give a weeks notice, so if you have worked 1 year, then 1 week, 2 years, 2 weeks etc. Read your contract and it should state timings on terminating employment

I am on the understanding that if you get paid wkly you give one weeks notice, if you get paid 4wks its 4wks and monthly a month. but if you have a contract it should say in there good luck with your new venture

If you have a contract of employment refer to that as it usually states it. If not, are you weekly or monthly paid. Accordingly give notice. It does not make any difference that you are part time.

Check your contract - should be specified there.

Firstly check your contract of employment as that will normally state what notice they require.

If there is no contract then the Employment Rights Act 1996 requires you to give one weeks notice.

If your contract requires you to give more than one week then if you don't there is actually little your employer can do unless you cause them a financial loss. However, this would affect any reference and its always good to try and leave on good terms so I would always give the notice that my contract states if possible.

You need to check your contract - it will say in there.

If you are in the UK and you don't have a contract, then you must give the statutory notice period which is one week. This applies whether full-time or part-time, and is not affected by how often you are paid. Please note that even though this is the *statutory* minimum, if you have a contract then your contract overrides this.

Ignore those who tell you to give more than this or who tell you to give as much as possible - you only do this if you can afford for your employer to tell you to just leave immediately (if they do, you are entitled to payment in lieu of the statutory minimum which is one week, but no more than this).
