is it possible a company wont hire me because of my qualifications?
|
was in college for 3 years, started when I was 16
I am qualified as a Legal Secretary and an Administrator. Since leaving I cant get a job anywhere as they all want atleast 2 years experience.
So I have been out of work for nearly a year. I have been trying to get any noral jobs now. Such as, in a shop, receptionist, anything and no one will hire me, I have been sending atleast 4 - 7 CV's a week plus sending CVs using my e-mail and not one person wants to hire me,
is it possible they will look at my qualifications and know I will not be at the "normal" job long??? why is it so hard? I live in a small town and I have tried applying in the city next to me.
thanks every one
I have reposted this because I posted it in the US yahoo

Yes, this is called "Overqualified". It means they think you will get bored or find something better and then leave, which costs them time and money when they have to train someone new to replace you.
You should be able to go through your college's career center (or something similar) to find jobs that are offered to recent college graduates - even if you have graduated already. |

Don't rely on the internet and mail so much. Get out and meet people face to face.
On the internet or on paper you are just another respondent. If you meet people face to face, then you become real to them. |

I would suggest doing some agency work to get some relevant experience, and then try again for the legal jobs. If that still doesn't work then try to get a more permanent 'normal job' by leaving off your qualifications, and then when a legal job comes up try to make your experience seem really applicable to the job and make it sound like you can use the experience in a legal secretary job. |

You need to find a "Temp agency". They put people into temporary positions. You'll jump from job to job for a while, but if someone likes you, they'll ask you to hire in. |

2 year's experience seems a bit much. Why don't you register with an employment agency? You could also try temping for a while to get experience. Sometimes temp jobs can become permanent. Don't you have any contacts at all a friend, parent, cousin, aunt who can help get your foot in the door somewhere if you can't get in any other way? |

they will still might hire you. |

Yes, if you are over qualified you run the chance of taking the job of the person that hires you and at that point you become a threat to their stability. |

The problem here is not qualifications, it's lack of experience & you won't get the experience you need in a small town unless you walk around to every office & offer to cover for the secretaries/receptionists when they're on annual leave. The suggestion from several people that you should try temping is a good one & if it's possible you should go for it. |

Well, since you can't find it yourself, then you'll have to go through a temp agency. That's the route I have taken because it was so hard trying to find it myself. After a week of signing up through them I got a job.
I wish you luck. |

of course thats very possible and even probable. Leave stuff off your applications on "regular" jobs. Leaving stuff off isnt lying. Tell them things that will make them want to hire you, like stuff that will help you be a good employee to that company. The reason some places dont hire applicants that are over qualified is that they know they are only going to be used as a stepping stone and that you might want too much money. good luck. |

Please don't take anything I write to mean the wrong way, because I do mean 'well'. You should be 'qualified' enough, but I think it's always a problem for people early on to get the 'experience' they need.
Personally, I would try to target much larger organisations such as councils and utility companies and maybe call-centres. 3 years college doesn't sound too daunting to over qualified to me, perhaps your attitude or the way you look may be 'not quite right'. I think you need to ask close reliable friends and members of your family to give you an 'honest' assessment of yourself and try to taylor yourself to what you need to put across in order to get that job. Make sure that your CV is spot on and someone (professional) looks at it and gives you an honest verdict. It's all about selling yourself, it's as simple as that. Good luck. |

Go to an Agency, they will send you to different jobs in the areas you want and you will sometimes get taken on if you do well, also you ge lots of experience to put on your CV. |

Sadly yes - people tend to steer clear of over qualified people for just the reasons you mention.
I'm afraid I don't know of a way around it - personally I HAVE hired people that appeared over qualified in the past and, true to expectations, they didn't last.
One thing you COULD try though is joining a temping or contracting agency - at least that way you are being completely up front about your intentions! |

honestly the market just stinks right now so that may be possible or it may be possible they're just flooded with resumes and went with someone with more experience gathered towards their particular job. and you have to keep in mind most of those jobs want as much experience as possible too. |
