redundant, now ex-employer is advertising jobs...?

my partner was made redundant in march because they couldn't afford to keep him and 6 other people, now the company have recently advertised the same job and are looking for new employees.

are they allowed to do that? i thought they had to at least ask the ex-employees if they wanted the job back before they advertised. can anyone shed some light on this, and is there anything i can do? thanks

All I can suggest is he apply for the job. He already has the experience. He may not get paid what he was when he was laid off, but he would be employed. Sometimes employers do this just in order to get some breathing room and cut back on expenses.
