Find answers to your legal question.

Do I have to tell my employer I'm married?

Im getting married with my boyfriend but we want to keep our marriage a secret. When I apply for a job am I required to tell my employer I'm married? Could I still use my maiden name? How can I keep it a secret?

If you need to keep it a secret you are FAR from being an adult. And yes you need to let your employer know your marriage status for insurance and tax information purposes.

As long as you don't legally change your name it shouldn't be a problem.

But why are you secretly getting married????? That is bizarre.

No, you do not have to tell your employer that you are married. You may continue to use your maiden name if that is the name on your social security card.

Marriage isn't supposed to be a secret. The whole point of it is that you are one with your partner. How can you be one when everyone else believes you're just you?

You can't lie on those tax forms.

You do not have to announce your marriage and yes you can keep your maiden name.

For tax reasons, being married is more profitable. Also, if you are just applying for a job, I'm pretty sure its the law to use your LEGAL name, not an alias. So if you change your legal name when you get married, I think you have to complete all of your official documents using it. A lot of employers do a background check.

no, you cant tell them that. if you tell them you're married thats going against your rights. you have full rights to not tell! if they ask, sue them

If your employer is like most and decided that keeping you marriage a secret is the same as lying you might get fired. Secret marriages are not a good idea, it creates all sorts of problems when people start finding out and they will.

You will get more money deducted, insurance is going to be higher if you claim to be single and it is disrespect full to hide your so called loved one.

You have to tell. How old are you?

I think in most cases you do tell the employer because it affects the amount of withholding tax that they send in to the IRS. Perhaps if you and your boyfriend/husband are going to file with the IRS as "married but filing seperately" you would not have to tell the employer but then you will lose the tax benefits that come from being married.
