If I could be 18 again I would go. And You?

Thats conscription and should only ever be forced upon people in times of desparate military need ie WW2. Or unless the regular units and their reserves can't handle the situation even then it should be voluntary. If you forced that in any constitution then alot of other things would become negelected. For example Scientific research, Health care, country infrastructure, all these and more would become second to the military when the need for defence is minimal as opposed to the economy. An economy is waht keeps a country going if you sacrifice that for a military prowess then the country has little or no wealth and it falls into a state of anarchy.
I'm not in the Military A: Because I'm not 18 yet B: I beleive my country doesn't need me to join yet C: Not being selfish but I have a future and career to think of before i join up. I want a future secured for me and a possible family.
If youn join up and are forced to then that means your also forced to serve the minimum amount of years usually 2 or 3 so not only do you have the first year of basic training but you also have the next 3 years in the army, navy or Air force which you could be using to secure a good future by goin to uni and further education.
I stand by what I say the military whilst a pressing issue doesn't come before an economy. The Economy is the beating heart of a country the military is there to defend those who build the economy and country.
Great leaders weren't always the ones who went out and conquered other nations at the expense of their own country. Great leaders also build up the country and make it stable through use of teh economy. |

I am female and I DID go into the military when I was 18. And if I was 18, I would do it all again.
But... by the way you phrased your question, it sounds like you did not go. HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM. |

why do you feel everyone 18-30 should join the military? do you think they should be forced to join? do you want people who dont want to be in the military in the military? do you think the military wants people in the military who dont want to be there? you should think about it a little. |

First of all, I did join the military.
Second of all, my husband is still in the military.
Third of all, most people who are in the military do NOT want a draft or a mandatory military obligation, because, frankly, often their lives literally depend on the person serving next to them, and nobody wants to serve with (and depend on) someone who doesn't want to be there (by there I mean in the military), and who is possibly doing whatever they can do to get out, or doing the bare minimum to squeak by and stay out of trouble.
Look at it like this - how would you feel if there were a rule that said, say, everyone should have to work as a health care provider (even if you aren't a Dr or a Nurse, you could get training as a Nurses Aide or an Orderly). That, too, is a noble field that serves our society. But would you really want your bedpan emptied, your sheets changed, your meals brought, etc by someone who didn't want to be there, hated the job, and was, at best, just marking time until they could do what they really wanted, or would you want to be cared for by someone who had an interest and aptitude for the job?
How about the job you do? Do you want your co-workers (or your employees or, even, your bosses) to be there because they enjoy their job and get a satisfaction out of doing their job well, or do you want to work with someone who is just punching the clock and passing the buck?
Same concept, only in the military, that attitude costs lives. |

Well,
my dad is in the air force. but he is 41 and retired. He does a desk job. but when he first went in he loaded bombs. I was only a baby then. Now he just does a desk job.
I am not 18 and I am not allowed. I wanted too but God doesn't want me to go there. He would rather have me go to the spiritual battle field. He wants to use my musical talents to bring lost souls to the Kingdom of God. |

I did my bit for God and country and I have to say that I would not want to hang it out there with people who did not choose to do so just like I did. An all volunteer force is superior. |
|

desiderio
|
But DID you go when you WERE 18? The military isn't right for everyone, and if it were required, we wouldn't have an all-volunteer military, which is one of the things that makes us great. You'd have a lot more slackers and losers putting our legitimate soldiers in more danger than necessary. |

All covers a lot of people!! Why are you so judgmental?
The military is not for every one and we no longer have the draft. My mother saw every one of her sons go and I had a son and my husband that served, so I am not anti-military; I just think you are a little overbearing. Why didn't you go when you were 18? |

I am. I joined the Army National Guard to serve my Country, State, and community after high school. I am now serving my second tour of duty in Iraq. Unless you have a Strong family, like I do, it's very stressful and hard on the kids. National Guard is the way to go, my opinion. Sure we don't get the benefits like the regular Army does. but, We're serving cause we still love the family like union that Guard units have. |

Hon, most children are born to that age group. Who is gonna raise all those babies when there mothers and fathers are away or die in the war? That plan won`t work.
By the way, I`m 51 now, I tried when I was 18, they wouldn`t take me. Heart condition.. Not everyone is FIT for Military duty.. I certainly wouldn`t want someone with a heart condition watching MY back..

Because I retired after 28 years of service in the U.S. Army. And I would do it all over again, too. |

I agree 18 to 30 yo, belong in the military, How old are you? I served my time, how about you? you talk a good game, but where and did when did you serve? Semper Fi. |

I agree all people of able age should serve, I tried three differant branches and was denied for permanant knee damage I sustained in high school. I am jealous of all who can, do, and have served. |

I take it by your statement you did not and that was your choice that others fought for to give you the right. SO, that being said where do you get off saying that all 18-30 should join it is not the right choice for all. |

I believe all those who vote for a war should fight in the war as well as their sons and daughters and or grandchildren.
I believe YOU should be allowed to fulfill your desire and have an opportunity to join the military, regardless of your age.
How brave you have become since you can no longer serve. |

I'm not in the military because I am 51 years old. If I had it do over again I possibly would. |

Because we don't do conscription. |

Lick_My_Toad

But you didn't so don't badmouth others who don't go. (And yes, I did. And I'm now 50 so too old). |
|

Bacteria Boy
 |
Because if that were so, a country would collapse. I'm studying to be a microbiologist. If i had to be in the army from 18-30, then i would go to uni at 30 till 33. and 12 years would have been wasted. Doctors take years to qualify - people wouldnt become doctors until they were nearly 40, which bearing in mind how much it costs to train them would be a waste.
There are the economic reasons since the governament and not industries would have to pay all these 18-30 years olds. People would have children latter in life which increases the risk of genetic abnormalities...
On top of all that, the UK has a small amount of highly trained infantry, as opposed to the american and chinese way of having a very large group of not very well trained men. We don't need a large army! |

Just because YOU believe it, doesn't mean it must be done. Coo, I wouldn't want to live with you. As a matter of interest I did serve 5 years in the airforce. |

I'm a veteran and I disagree. Do you realize the number of idiots and losers there are out there? The modern military needs intelligent and disciplined recruits not Joe "surfer dude" or Betty "smokin da weed" to sign up. |

Why didn't you join up when you were that age?
I'm not knocking you, just asking. |
|

Just passing through.
 |
So? A draft? With some changes made, of course.
We agree. For once.
But which branch did you join when you WERE 18?
Oh, you didn't join, but now want a draft? Typical. |

I am a proud American and would love to join the militraty and be able to fight for my country. The reason I haven't is:
1. I have 2 small children and no one to take care of them if I went into the service because my husband works, my parents live too far away from us plus my mom is very sick, and my husbands mom is also very sick.
2. I live in a different country.
3. My husband is militraty for his country and because of confidentiality rules, it excludes me from being able to join. FYI, we got married when I was still a teenager.
I have other reasons, but they are a little bit private to be mentioning in a public forum. I gave you 3 valid reasons why I haven't joined the military. What are your reasons for not joining when you had the chance? Don't judge others on something that you haven't even done yourself. |
