That is you for to figure out since it is you life to live. Hand to hand combat training is only one part of training. The honest question you have to find out on your own is what kind of job you want to do in the military in General. To many people are always worried about Boot Camp and things like that. What recruits need to know is that the most important thing is to get the job you want to do in the military.
Too many Marines join and get stuck with something the recruiter choose for them to do. Then they are stuck doing something that hate for 4 years. And lets be honest, nobody want to be at a job that they hate. Especially a job you can't quit for the amount of time on your enlistment.
I seriously suggest doing some research on what you want to do in the military. And not just concentrate on one part of Marine Corps training like Hand to hand combat.

YES.

people are afraid because they're cowards..

You would have to be one of 3 things: dumb, mental or suicidal to join the military period. Most of my friends that have gone into the military are not exactly fully functional after their experience. With increased popularity, martial arts instructors are in demand everywhere. Why not take advantage and enjoy the life of a professional trainer? In my biased opinion..... NO!

You should talk to someone in the Marines. Look up the Public Affairs phone number for any Marine base or air station and just talk to the Lance Corporal or PFC who answers the phone.

Then go talk to a recruiter about if you can even get an MOS for Martial Arts.

That's a really asinine question. You don't want to go to war? Don't make me laugh. I'm not sure if you've heard this, but going to war is what Marines DO. That's their JOB. Don't join. We don't need people like you out in the field...which is exactly where you'd go, incidentally. And why the heck are you asking a bunch of strangers this anyway? Do we know anything about you? Your likes? Your dislikes? Your tendencies? Your strengths? Your weakness? ANYTHING? No. The only thing I know is that you don't want to fight and yet you're wondering if you should join the military...yeah, that's about it.

If you don't want to go to war, then don't join the military. What do you think the military is for? It is not a place where you decide if you want to just do training and not use what you are training personnel for.
And definitely don't think you are so great that you would be an asset for the US. You will not be an assassin for the United States. Grow up and get real

If you don't want to go to war, then you have no business joining the military. Consider all the Marines who have gone to Iraq for three or more tours. Do you think they were planning that when they joined the Marines? How long do you plan to stay in the Marines... maybe just a few years, take your chances on not fighting a war? If you have a long career, you increase your chances more and more. My Dad was in the Army. He is a veteran of WWII, Korea, and Vietnam. Imagine the Marines now who served in Iraq I, Iraq II, and Afghanistan. I support the military. They are great people. But if you don't want to go to war, the military is not for you. Oh, you might talk to a Marine recruiter and ask him if you could just be a martial arts instructor for your entire career. I wouldn't believe him if he said yes.

Hi again,

I think you are already answering your own question. Trust your own decisions.

If you love Martial arts go and speak to successful martial artists in different instituions where it is taught (not in the military) and find out how they got their jobs/positions and follow them.

It sounds as though you are very anti violence of any sort (mental, physical, spiritual etc.) so apply your OWN values to this passion of yours and let the rest take care of itself.

Looking at previous questions you have asked, part of feeling better would be taking care of yourself and honouring your own values - this would be one of them.

I also get the definite sense you are really engaging with life now - take it easy and if you need support, inspiration and help from others - ask for it!

Namaste.

Go for it. If you don't like it you can always quit.

I know people that have both loved and hated the military...

My friend, Stacy, joined the ARMY and HATED it and got out by using her husband’s medical problems as an excuse while her twin brother joined the Marines and it was the best move he ever made in his life...

I have a friend in the Navy right now that may not like it but admits that he was just a slacker until he joined so it was the best thing he ever did.

I have a friend in the Air Force that decided to go AWOL after finding out he had a degenerative eye disorder that they SHOULD have caught before allowing him to sign up... They should be prosecuting him for desertion any day now...

It is up to you but despite all the negative, EVERYONE tells me that it was an experience that they would not have changed if they could go back…

It allowed them to focus, to become disciplined, to stop being slackers and become the wonderful people they are today…

You shouldn't join if you don't want to go to war, because our country is in a time of war so everyone who joins runs the risk of going. But, having said that, the military is a wonderful career choice for many young men and women. It gives people like you who have unique training a place to excel in the things they love. You will have a choice in your MOS or job, so if you don't want to be an assassin you shouldn't have to. My husband is retired military and we both think that the military is a great choice for many people.
Good luck with your decision! And God bless you for even considering joining the brave people who protect our nation!!!

If you don't want to go to war-don't join the military

ptcanon
I don't understand these types of questions. If you do not want to go to war or be associated with war, why would you even consider joining the military. That is what the men and women in the military do. They serve their nation by practicing for war during peace...its called military readiness. And when serious world developments call for their wartime service, they ship out to all sorts of places around the world to do whatever the mission call for.

I feel the need to make one other comment regarding your comments. I'm really not trying to offend you, but seriously, the military is nothing like Hollywood portrays it. Assassins...? I'm pretty sure you won't find that career field in the recruiter's handbook of available jobs. There's always the Special Forces, but that isn't something the Marines will put you into. That is something you have to elect to do yourself. And then you will work harder than you've ever worked and achieve things you did not believe yourself capable of. But as you said, that's not for you.

Don't join. Seriously. If you don't really want to serve, if you are looking for a fun job teaching martial arts, head over to the local YMCA and see if they need instructors.

Why is everyone so afraid of the Military? Yes you should, if that is what you want to do. There are many benefits and you learn a lot about pretty much everything. I'm in the Army and I love it. You have to make sure that it is what you want to do though. Go talk to a recruiter and see what they have to say. Research as much as possible before you make your decision. And get advice from people that have been in the Military. It's all about weighing your options. It is a huge commitment and you shouldn't do it if you aren't willing to give 100%....

i am thinking about joining too but that wont be in another 3 to 4 years
but just like you i dont wanna be a killer either
so im thinking the coast guard or something but if you join the marines there is a little bit of chance they would make you do something like that
or most likely you would just end up serving at some naval base or aircraft carrier

If you don't want to go to war then you shouldn't join the Marines. My husband joined the Air Force thinking that he wouldn't be deployed since the majority of the forces that you hear about over there are army and marines. However, he is over there as we speak. So if you join, more likely than not, you will go to Iraq.

Yeah...
It's your choice, but I really think that anything would be better than going to war...
You could try out for teaching Martial Arts in a military school, though! That would be really good, and really good money as well.

Do some more research. Try and talk to people who have been recruited for similar talents. If you don't find anything other than what you have now...I would say NO.

You know there is a war going on right now right? If you join any branch of the military you will end up in Iraq doing something.

BTW: Marines is always capitalized.

The military is not for you. When you take your oath, you are committing to provide and take up the use of force to defend the mission of the military and the country's commander in chief at a moments notice and without objection.

Honorable thought, what about teaching via university team or club? Perhaps, earn further degrees to then assist you set up your own dojo.

All too often we see people with passion and interests fail to set up a proper business plan and connect the financial needs with the internal passion.

From a 12 year Army Reservist involved in combat arms.

All the best with your next decision.
