Why would soldiers be stationed overseas?

After finishing BCT and AIT why would you be stationed overseas?
Additional Details
Dan In Miami.....I didn't join the military and I know that they can be deployed overseas, but I was just wondering if that was the same thing as being stationed or not.

Don't knock it. Some of my best duty was overseas. I miss travel the most about being in the military.

Do you know how much it costs to go to the places you get to go for free? I loved seeing new parts of the world. I wish I had the money now and I would travel some more and go to places I've never been.

I'm an old vet now and have to pay for it.

Oh, but to answer, we still have strategic and national interests in overseas locations. If we can extend our Army/Navy out there then we are defending our own borders. This can be for both economic as well as physical security....Study history all great nations extended their military. If you want to have a strong country you have to visit other countries with your military. (I'm not even talking about war...per se...we still go out when we are at peace.)

The simple answer is a soldier gets sent to what ever post needs them the most. If the soldier is a Blackhawk Helicopter mechanic and they Army is short 15Ts in Weisbaden Germany, guess where or new troop is going. It doesn't matter so much how long a soldier has been in, they get sent where they are needed. Soldiers spend 1-3 years in overseas assignments (depending on where they get sent and whether they take their family) once they have spent there time over there they transfer (Called a PCS move, Permanent Change of Station) to a base back in the States.

readiness, the United states armed forces are anywhere and ready to be deployed for anything in 24 hours notice. Their is alot more operations and small conflicts that are talked about on then news, The united states acts as a peace keeper. we assign our troops to friendly bases all over the world so we can intervene in conflicts and give aid to country's that are in need of it. I hope this helped. Support our troops I have 5 Friends in the forces and Im joining this week.

To bring business to local brothels, clubs and pubs. What else do you think they would be out there? Oh you mean they could be there to support the mission that is helping the security of our nation? nah that's not it. I am sure it must be because of what I told before.

being stationed is to your duty station, being deployed is to a combat zone. there are bases he/she could be stationed at all over the world.

the military has these bases throughout the world because of their strategic location.

from their duty station, the will be deployed. but their duty station is their 'home' until they get pcs orders to move some place else.

I could answer this with a question. Why wouldn't you be? After military training like any job you do what your told.

Because we have bases overseas.

Why do we have bases overseas?
So we can rapidly deploy to any hotspot in the world if need be.

I certainly wouldn't complain, it is probably the best chance you will get to live overseas.

Edit: You are correct about the difference between a permanent duty station and a deployment. Permanent duty stations tend to be in places where we either at one time or currently have an interest in security in that region or it is part of an alliance agreement.

For example, we have a bunch of bases in Germany because of the cold war and NATO, and our bases in South Korea are there in case North Korea tries anything and our obligation to South Korea (technically the Korean war never ended, we only signed a truce, not a peace treaty).

If you don't know the answer to that one . . . I'm not sure you're smart enough to even enter the military . . . . .

There are wars going in Iraq, . . . Afghanistan . . . . and we have bases ALL over the world . . . .

Even if you're a Brit . . . . Prince Harry went to Afghanistan . . .

If you don't want to be deployed . . . why did you join the military?

Let me guess . . . . for the benefits . . . .

If you are not interested in going to other countries and serving your country then you should not enter the service. I loved my time oversees and would do it again if I were young enough to. You are free because People put themselves in harms way to keep you that way. I went to a funeral last weekend for a service man that was killed in action; So please if you love your freedom don't put down those that serve.
