I agree with Nemesis, Civic duty has not been taught since the early '70s. When the Pledge of Allegiance was forcibly removed from my classroom. Without being taught civic duty
and honor, there is no reason other than personal gain to join any branch. I think we should be like most other countries, and have a mandatory 2 year enlistment.
Between high school and the rest of somebodies life.
I served in Korea, with the 2/72 Ar Bn. (among other units)
Always 2nd to None!!! |

what about values/ethics... and that you have a brain to understand that the war in Iraq is just for petroleum and not "to bring democracy" or a "war on terror"... If there is a problem why don't they send UN soldiers?? |

Pay is too low.Too many good paying jobs out there. Also the Military is picky about who can join. |

In the "older days" people believed it was an honorable, noble & glorious thing to die for your country... then they woke up & realised that war was futile & wrong... its not that people are cowards, its that they're wiser now!
(...and who would die for something they don't believe in?? If they don't like Bush, why would they put their lives at risk because of him?!) |

I've got no interest in signing up to kill people so that corporate America can make more millions off oil. |

I really can't believe whats been posted in here...if you are the people I serve because I am a Marine, maybe its time I get out and start my own country. If you are the Americans I thought I loved, I guess I am the stupid one for thinking my countrymen are worth the lives they want to lead. I see that most of you here aren't worth the spit I shine my boots with...the United States is falling apart from the inside. I am truly sorry for this. |

In the older days the army usually served the right purposes. |

First of all, it doesnt matter if a million more soldiers join the army, the war wont be over until bush says its over. And it wont be over until the militants in Iraq who are resisting the occupation stop fighting, and since thats not gonna happen, it wont be over any time soon. I as much as i love america, I dont kill, and especially a people who have done nothing to us. The militants have a right to defend their country from occupation, and if Germany for example tried to come and control America and go around arresting people for no reason, I'd try to blow them up too. I do believe killing is very wrong, but its going around on both sides. Remember, we are only hearing america's side of the story on the news, try listening to Iraqi news for a change. |

not too many people r looking to die for someone elses mistakes. the war could of been prevented but america is sometimes too greedy they want everything to be theirs and like them. about iraq they(bush) knew it was coming and could of done something sooner about it without so many people dying. bush dont care about us he just cares if he got what he wanted. |

Yeah my Dad is a WWII hero.I'm proud that he did his part. But I still think war is foolish. |

This war has more of a feeling like the Crusades than a moral or just cause. I feel I show more patriotism and support for my country by NOT supporting this debacle. |

Are you kidding.. In Viet-nam, (that was Johnsons War, the ones the Democracts started and made money from Haliburton, Brown and Root , Bell and other companies) there were LOTS of cowards. Some went to Canada, others went to School (thats why there are so many dumb teachers were teaching public school, as they stayed in to get out of draft) You think country folks are patriotic? Most I knew were all for the war ..as long as THEIR kid didnt go. You could get out of draft by being a farmer.. Yep they were cowards.Still are. |

Everyone has their own reasons...it has nothing to do with being a coward. Do you serve? If so, you should know the reasons that some people won't. If you don't, then you have no idea wht you're talking about. |

It's not that people are cowards, they just want to see this country fall to it's knees. If I was back in my old country before I was dragged here I would have joined their army in a heartbeat. Noone wants to defend a peice of krap. |

The odds are better that way... |

I am not one for calling names on here, but you are an idiot!!!
First of all, not serving in the military is not an act of cowardness. Some people enjoy their freedom of thought and expression therefore remain a civilian.
Secondly, you may like to shoot or drop a bomb on someone becuase an officer of higher ranking has ordered you to do so, but that does not mean everyone else does.
Thirdly, the "war in Iraq" is far from over. It is an effin' quagmire and there is a bigger picture than it appears your are convinced of. Is your effin' solution to have the entire military force in Iraq to kill everyone then there is nothing to worry about. You have no clue as to what is going on around you. The solution to Iraq (if there be one) is not simply military force.
The armed forces have declined in recruitment efforts not becuase of discontent for Bush, but people see now that this is a nonsense battle. After 9/11 there was a rise in enlistment becuase we wanted to protect our nation from terrorists. Well, Iraq did not terrorize the U.S. and people see this 'war' for what it is. The Neocon's plans for victory will never happen and everyone but them have realized that. |

lol lol lol hahahaha oh ho ho he he he he. oh damn, you are fukn stupid. in the old days people were easy to fool into believing obsurdities & therefore could easily be made to committ atrocoties. as we all know, the 'news' is our mommy & will tell us what to think. now, we have ways of crosschecking facts to make sure its not all 'spin' (lies). we're not cowards, in fact we're more courageous. we arent afraid of going after those who threaten us. like the government & big business. iraq never threatened us & never attacked us. do yourself a favor & reasearch what you talk about so you arent made a fool of by your own ignorances. |

I like to see it coming. In Iraq, you blow up, die, and don't even know it. That ain't fair. That's why people aren't joining up. Plus, why die for people who don't want you to save them? |

It's not a matter of cowardice. Defending your country is something any red-blooded American, who was physically capable, would proudly do! But the war in Iraq isn't about defending our country! Yes the terrorists attacked us on 9/11, but they weren't from Iraq. Osama Bin Laden isn't in Iraq, they've not yet found any weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. What is in Iraq is oil and I believe that is the basis of this war. Bush, Chaney, Haliburton, oil, greed and no one wants to fight and die for these things. |

You are very much misinformed. People are enlisting in the US armed forces. And you are wrong, the war in Iraq will not be terminated just by the number of US troops fighting there. This is only one of many thing, you have yet to consider.
The war won't be over until the high level US politicos says it over. |

I was in the Army but less people join because its not about being a patriot anymore..its all about what people can get out of it for themselves |

You not giving our young people credit for being smart. You are also un-informed on the issue. Our young people are far smarter than you think of them. It was our young people who got us out of NAM. We had 500,000 troops when we went into Kuwait. Iraq surrendered, they had no tanks, no planes and no Army in this invasion. Where is the honor in attacking a country the size of Texas, after they surrendered? I see none. Iraq hates Democracy, they prefer a "Islamic republic", they will return to that form of Government when we leave. The question is will another 2200 brave Americans die before we leave? Our young people will do the right thing, they have a voice.
There are 32 million Americans between the age of 17 & 24.
75 percent are ineligible for service. Only 13.6 million are recent High school graduates of that 32 million age group.
Of the remaining 13.6 million, 30 percent are Obese and 30 percent can not pass a physical test and 30 percent have a criminal record. Do the math. The small number left are not at all stupid. They support what is right, not what is just plain wrong. |

liberal teachers and professors are telling kids these days that our government and it's military are evil. They want freedoms of speech and to assemble and to protest, but don't want to fight for them. plus no sense of pride |
