How about on the curbside?!?

Why do engineers design cars this way?
Why is the driver door always open to traffic and not to the curbside where is more safe? Even in England, cars have the drive wheel on the right you would think the door would open to the sidewalk but nnnooooo is build to incoming traffic too. The U.S.postal cars doors open curbside because they care about them, what about us??
The cars should be build according to the buyers needs, if you are an old man and only drive in the city is better to have the door open on the curbside and if you drive a lot on two way roads behind box trucks have it open 2 the left. If you are unhappy in your marriage or you drive your mother in law around have it open to incoming traffic. We are the public and we pay 4 cars so we should decide which way the door opens, right?
First of all mail workers are not looking for mailboxes on either side of the street they look for addresses. 2th how many times do you people drive on a 2 way road a year and have to pass a boxcar? Maybe once! 3th- i'm talking about older people or single people that do not give rides to ofen and 4th I said we should decide which side of the car we want our drivewheel, DDAAA!! Where did you learn to read? But that's another question!

Passenger doors are curbside. The driver is to ensure passenger safety.
Diver's side is always closest to oncoming traffic, for the best view, no matter what side of the road you drive on.
Postal service vehicles are backwards - not for safety, but for convenience of delivery. Mailboxes are never in the center of the street.
Why have conventions such as these?
Safety is a big one, in a number of ways. Cars are to be driven.
Driver placement gives best line of sight, so is safest. |

Doors opening are a convenience most of the time. Curbside doors would only work with bench seats, several cars with dented drivers doors have had ppl crawling over the consoles or around the floor shifter.
If you want to exit on the curbside you are welcome to use that method, I think you would get tired of it in a week. |

1. Cars, worldwide, are designed with the driver's seat on the side closer to the oncoming traffic, so that the driver can better see if the car is far enough from the seat of the road to avoid hitting the oncoming traffic.
2. The driver may use either door. If it is not safe to exit on the driver's side, the driver may (after any passengers exit) climb over to the front passenger's seat and exit on the curbside. |

You're thinking about parking convenience, a minor issue compared to on the road safety. It is much safer for the driver to be closer to the center of the road than closer to the curb. You are in a much better position to see what's ahead. In Europe/US - they drive on the right so the driver sits to the left to be closer to the center of the road. In the UK/Ireland, it's the opposite. In either case, that means the drivers door does open into the road instead of the curb. If you're uncomfortable with that you can get a van or something that would enable you to get in the passenger side and move to the drivers side pretty easily.
If you ever get a chance to drive a car that has the wheel on the opposite side of where it typically is where you live, you'll see what I mean, it isn't good. |
