Do you need to have good credit history to become a foster parent?

Do you need to have good credit history to become a foster parent?

Does anyone know if in IL you have to have really good or perfect credit to become a foster parent? Thank you so much for your help!

I'm not sure about the credit check bit I do know that you list all your "bills" and how much you owe and list all your income.

In Connecticut, they don't even check your credit when they do your home study. This probably varies from state to state. I think the main concern would be whether there's any danger of the bank foreclosing on your home. If that's not the case, I don't think anyone would have a problem with some late payments on credit cards, or anything like that.

They don't do a credit check, so credit history is not important.

Generally, the foster parent would have to demonstrate that they are able to financially support the child(ren) in their care. Often times, with "bad" credit, that may mean a bankruptcy or something like that, but that does not mean that at this point in time, you cannot financially provide for your wards. Best bet would be to contact whatever agency you are considering getting licensed with and ask them about the specifics of your situation. Good luck!

I'm not sure about IL, but in Texas, they don't do a credit check. They might want to see your tax returns to verify your income, but Texas only uses pay stubs. The important thing to keep in mind is that you MUST be financially responsible, not RICH but secure. If you are having money problems, you might want to remedy these BEFORE taking on a foster child(ren) as they will add more stress to your life just in the nature of their past issues and possible behavioral problems. You will need to demonstrate to the state that you can support the children without the state's aid, even if they do provide subsidies. When in doubt, you can alway telephone the state agency and they will tell you whether they require a credit check or not. Either way, good luck in your quest!
