Can I get German citizenship through ancestry? Read my particular case and tell me!?

Hi, I've done a lot of research on this but am still so confused on the laws. I even called the German mission in my area and spoke with someone, but want people's first-hand experience with this too: I believe my father (and thus, I as well) am entitled to German citizenship. His mother and father were German, born in Mannheim (1914) and Heidelberg (1906), respectively. They emigrated to the USA in 1951. My father was born in 1952, and was American. His parents, however, did not become naturalized, and had to renounced their citizenship until December of 1956. He was raised with the German language and culture. So, technically, his parents German at the time of his birth, but he was born in NJ and has only American citizenship. I was directed by the consulate of NYC to go to: http://www.germany.info/Vertretung/usa/de/05__Dienstleistungen/02__Staatsangehoerigkeit/07__Feststellung/__Feststellung__StA__Ausweis.html and download the first two PDF files, fill them out and send them to the consulate. Does anyone know what my chances/my father's chances are of obtaining German citizenship. I want to live in the EU and having this citizenship would greatly help my chances of finding a job/not having to worry about getting deported after 90days/broaden my options to work in the EU. I lived in the EU for a year during college and it was so much easier for EU citizens to stay and work during that time than for americans! Please give me any feedback about this, I would be happy to answer any other questions about my case to make it clearer. THANKS!

Your father needs to make an application for German citizenship at the German Consulate, after he becomes a German citizen, then you can apply for German citizenship as well, German citizenship is passed indefinitely as long as it is passed from one generation to the other. In the case that if your father did not became a German citizen, you cannot claim German citizenship, because under German law, a person is a German citizen if one of the parents is a German citizen, irrespective of the place of birth. In the case that if your father doesn't become a German citizen (i.e. he passes away or does not want to acquire German nationality) You can apply for Germany citizen by naturalisation by living in Germany for 3 years as a grandchild of a German citizen. In other case, just file an application for citizenship and let's see what happens.
