Do I qualify as a British Citizen/Subject/National?

Hi All, My Father and Grandfather were born in London, I was born in Australia, My parents never married....I don't think my birth was ever registered. I was born in July 1982. Thank you for your time.

Under the British Nationality Act 1948, the law in force at the time you were born, the status of "British Subject and Citizen of the United Kingdom and Colonies" (as British Citizens were known under that Act - it changed in 1983) was acquired at birth if you were born in the UK, or born outside the UK to a British-born father who was married to your mother. So you are not British. If you'd been born a year later, the British Nationality Act 1981 would have been in force, which removed the requirement for parents to be married. It still didn't make British citizenship automatic - it was still necessary to become a British Citizen by registration before the age of 18. That last requirement was removed in 2006.
