How long does one have to live in the United States before becoming a naturalized citizen?

I have lived here 10 years and I was just wondering if it were possible for me to become a citizen of the USA I should mention that it has been off and on the last 10 years meaning I have gone back to Canada for periods at a time.

Why would you like to become a citizen? I heard there is not a lot of advantages and differences.

First -- you have to a LEGAL resident. Second, you have to have a permanent resident visa -- green card. Third, after you have been a legal permanent resident for 5 years, you can apply for citizenship, if you can pass the test about American history and civic duty which is in English. The green card requirement NEVER expires. You must ALWAYS get a green card before you can apply for citizenship. For the specific rules and requirements see the official INS website: http://www.uscis.gov/graphics/services/natz/index.htm
