What qualifications do you need to be a border control officer?

I am a British citizen with a British passport issued by the British Consulate in Geneva, Switzerland. The last time I went to England, the passport control officer at Heathrow looked at my passport and asked me if I was resident in Austria. 'I said, 'No.' He then asked me if I was resident in the UK. My answer was again 'No.' He looked very annoyed. I had to explain to him that I was resident in Switzerland and that Geneva was not in Austria. I was once 'pulled over' at Felixstowe and almost missed the overnight ferry to Zeebrugge. The guy took my passport and those of my two daughters, all of them issued in Switzerland, into his office. After about 15 minutes, he came back. I asked him what the problem was and he said he couldn't understand why 3 British passport holders were in a car with Swiss plates. I said, 'Well, you could have asked.' My car was the last on the ferry. And it's not just border control. A young British citizen, working in Spain, went to renew her passport in Milan. She was told that her passport was not valid, because she was born in Switzerland and that she should go to the Swiss embassy. Not only that, the British authorities informed her employers that she was working illegally in Spain and that, if they didn't terminate her contract immediately, they would also be in trouble. I'm interested in hearing from other people who have had similar problems. FH1984. Sums it up! No need to have any idea about geography then? After the guy had asked me if I lived in Austria, I was then scrutinised by a woman who gave me a 'funny' look. I asked her what the problem was, and she said, she had never seen my surname being used as a surname. I mentioned the surname of a well knownTV chef, and she said, 'Oh, yes.'
