A baby born in Canada is Canadian unless the parents are diplomats.
What the new law has mainly changed was to give citizenship to some people who did not have it before like people born outside Canada to a Canadian parent where the parent had neglected to register them for citizenship.
It has also lifted the requirements of 2nd generation born abroad Canadians to have to take steps to retain their citizenship but has also taken away the ability of 1st generation born abroad to pass on citizenship to their kids.
What that means is that if somebody was not born in Canada but inherited Canadian citizenship from a parent, their kids will not inherit their citizenship anymore if born after April 17. They can get citizenship of course if they are born in Canada, if their other parent is Canadian born in Canada and their parent could also sponsor them for permanent residency. |

YES - ALL babies born in Canada are still Canadian citizens - that part of the law has NOT changed.
I think because Canada does a MUCH better job of DENYING benefits to babies born in Canada (from visiting parents) that Canada does not have the problem with anchor babies that the USA has. |

I've always believed your birth line and where your blood line comes from determines your nationality. Other wise your insulting you family heritage. Always be proud of what you are, too many people try to be something else because of economic reasons. |
