Describing procedure?

I want to describe How the police handle crimes with few sentences as simple as possible. Occurrence of a crime -> The recognition of a crime -> The mobilization of Police officers -> Settlement What I'm not sure is...whether I have to use "the" and "a" in this sentence..would you give me advice please!

It depends how short you want to make it really. It won't be short if you want to describe how they handle crimes - there's so much of it. Also depends on what type of crime it is, as a small amount of damage with no suspect is dealt with differently to an armed robbery or a murder. For example:- Petty crime - no suspect. - Crime takes place. - Aggrieved party calls Police. - Call handling issues crime number when crime recorded. - Incident closed with no further lines of enquiry or Officer allocated incident to make further enquiries then closed when not detected. Major crime or crime with a suspect. - Crime takes place. - Aggrieved party calls Police. - Call handling send incident to radio room. - Call prioritised in relation to already outstanding jobs and urgency of attendance. - Officer attends scene. - Officer requests scene of crime officer. - Officer requests specialist unit attends (e.g. CID, crash investigation, firearms officers etc. etc.). - Scene log created. - Witness statements. - Photographs. - House to house enquiries. - Paperwork (and lots of it). - Arrest. - Interview. - Charge / bail etc. If all you wanted to know was the "the" and "a" bit - who cares as long as they know what you mean?

You appear to be asking an English language question, not a law question. You need to write according to the audience you intend to view your sentence. If they have said that it must be a sentence, then a sentence it must be. Bullet points are useful if allowed. As a single sentence, try: The police handling of crime begins with the occurrence of that crime followed by the recognition of the crime, the mobilisation of police officers and finally the settlement. (I don't fully understand your subject matter but I don't think I need to in order to link your points into a sentence).

There are far too many variable to make it a simple bullet type thing. I could write you 30 of these bullets that would all look different. Heres the simplest: Crime Crime recognition Police Response Arrest (interchangeable with Collection of Evidence) Collection of Evidence (interchangeable with Arrest) Judicial Proceedings Sentencing or Release based on Findings

If you can do bullet points then there is no real need for 'the' & 'a' but if you are writing then its definatley advisable.
