Do you need hard evidence to accuse someone of a crime?

Somebody lit the toilet paper dispenser on fire at my school and I saw the fire when I went into the fire Now the police are all over me, saying I id it (Which I know I didn't) Do they need hard-hitting evidence to convict you?

You can accuse anyone at all. But for the person to be charged and convicted then the onus is to prove the guilt of the individual.

JOHN
Yes the police need evidence that you lit the fire and were the cause thereof. Here in England a person is presumed innocent before being proved guilty and the accusers must show proof of guilt (evidence) and if they cannot do so then there is no case to answer and the accused person is then found 'not guilty'. Do not make any statement to the police unless in the presence of your legal representative - preferably a lawyer.

You don't need ANYTHING to accuse anyone of anything. But you will probably need evidence to CONVICT someone of a crime. It's possible that you can get convicted on eyewitness accounts alone. Nobody may have seen you do it, but if people see that you're the only one in the bathroom, and five minutes later you run out and there's a fire...guess who they'll blame. Many people have been wrongly incarcerated by bad eyewitness accounts...with no smoking gun so to speak. However, many of those people have now been exonerated with DNA evidence... Just some perspective.

All they need is Probabal Cause to effect an arrest. Get yourself an attorney, soon.

Tired of TTC!!
Yes, they need evidence. They would need to be able to "put the lighter in your hands". They would have to be able to show that it really was you that did it. Just because you walked out of the bathroom around the time it started doesn't mean you did it.
