Yes I have. A police woman plainly lied in court to get me convicted. I have been half strangled to near suffocation by a custody sergeant because I was drunk and wouldn't shut up. When I was in borstal I had two prison officers seriously insinuate I wasn't leaving alive. But I was a young hooligan and that is how it was 30 plus yrs ago. Later I had friends who the CID would go round and extort money from. One was paid to have his crim record removed, (before computers) but he didn't. I have known Policemen living free in accomodation owned by criminals and alsorts of reciprocal agreements.
However, I don't think that is so widespread or easy nowadays. I certainly don't think all police are that way. But if you are a crook, you are going to bring out the worst in them. lol. |

The most famous is Sacco and Vanzetti, but that was almost 100 years ago. On the street, police are often accused of setting people up and it does happen that innocent people are put through a great deal. The Duke rape case is more recent, though there was no conviction, and The Central Park Jogger case of 1989 is another example.
I do several prison cases in which guards get it wrong. I had one case dismiss a couple month back where the guards claimed my client ran at another prisoner and stab him in the head, both my client and the victim were then beaten by a third group. The problem was, my client couldn't have run anywhere, since he has a prosthetic leg that didn't function.
You have to remember though that most of the time those "falsely accused" aren't just randomly picked up. They are doing something wrong or have serious priors; it's just the evidence shouldn't stack up the way it does. I'm not saying it doesn't happen, as the New York Jogger case shows, it's just very rare. Sometimes racism is a factor, but it's also rare. Most of the time the police simply become convinced of an outcome and are overzealous, as in the Duke rape case. |

I am from overseas and I must say, the tolerance and behaviour of the police I've seen here is astonishing. They are so helpful and brilliant, I wouldn't beleive them to do anything like this.
I agree to both answers above, the ones in jail say so...
I've never been convicted as I strictly adhere to law but once had a massive argument with housemates in a shared accomodation where I had to punch a guy in the head, his girlfriend called Police (they were right a""holes) to scare me.
When they arrived, they mellowed things down and said this is a domestic dispute and you have to get landlord involved in it. If this goes beyond then case will be filed. I asked a few questions but since they didn't know the whole story, they answered to the best of their knowledge.
Also, the response time is amazing. |
